In Pennsylvania it says that the age of consent is 16 years old.... This doesn't make any sense to me. Does this mean that a 25 year old can have sex with a 16 year old and it would be okay if the 16 year old says it's okay and is not under the influence of anything? I don't know I'm just really confused on this and would like someone to tell me because if so then this law definitley needs to be change. Also, it should be the same age in every state regardless of sexual orientation.

I should explain that I'm in a relationship that is legal i'm 22 and he's 21. I just read it online and thought I'd ask. I don't want anyone to make any judgements about the questions asked.

Age of consent is the age a person can legally consent to having sex.

Yes, age of consent means that at that age consentable sex would not be punished. However, I believe there is an age limit, like a 16 year old could consent to sex but the other person could not be more than like 20 or something like that.

Age of consent is basically saying that at that age you are aware enough of your actions that you can make your own decisions. Doesn't mean an angry parent that finds out their 16 year old daughter had sex with her 21 year old b/f that they HATE and have him arrested.

different states have different laws, some are even different based on gender. the law of consent does not mean he will not get introuble with being with a 16 yr. old at 25 that is still statuatory rape if parents or yourself pressed charges, but it will not be the 40 yr possible sentence or the lifetime listing on the sexual offender registry. the law has a few grey areas. it is supposed to be law of consent with you 16 and person you are with under 21.

Nope. Not at all.
1) If you have sexual contact with someone under 18 and you are over 18 you can be charged with "unlawful sexual contact with a minor" or "corruption of a minor".
2) If the minor is under 16 and the adult is 20 or over and the adult is not married to the minor the adult can be charged with statutory sexual assault (rape)
3) other laws apply for younger children under the age of 14

I think we're still experimenting with this concept. You're right about these laws needing to be reviewed and re-written. The "age of consent" supposedly is that age at which the individual, boy or girl, is considered sufficiently mature to be aware of the social consequences of participating in sexual intercourse. It could be argued that the age one reaches puberty, when one is capable of fathering or mothering a child, could be the age. It could be argued that 18, the age of voting is reasonable. It could be argued that 21, the age of drinking, is reasonable. I agree that whatever age is decided, it should be consistent in this country.

If you have questions about this, then you obviously need to avoid any girl under the age of 18 like the plague or you are going to wind up in jail.
