Okay, this church has been getting hit down and questioned in the media. I just want to know what real Christians are saying about it. Is it really a Christian denomination, or a cult? I've heard a lot of stuff about the ICC just being another cult and I want to know what people really think of them. It looks valid to me, but a lot of Christian denominations are saying it's not. http://www.carm.org/icc.htm
And I don't believe organized religion is for me at all, just to be clear. I just wanted some opinions on this, since its gotten a lot of media lately.

Here are some other things I've found on it. I'm not even sure what all is true and not.

For that matter, what about The Family, also known as The Children of God?

A true Church of Christ does not put a name before "Church of Christ", so the word INTERNATIONAL in the title indicates it is not a true Church of Christ.

A number of new denominations are trying to use the "Church Of Christ" name to further their own purposes.

Universal Church of Christ, International Church of Christ, and United Church of Christ are all examples of such denominations. United Church of Christ is currently experiencing issues with openly Gay Ministers. Most other congregations frown on this practice because that appears to promote willfully sinning people being put in positions of leadership.

A regular Church of Christ is an independent congregation. There are no leaders beyond the Elders and Deacons appointed within that one congregation.

You will also know them by their faithful anherence to scripture. Even in their structure of the Worship service follows the examples written in the Bible. For example, since there were no musical instruments used in the First Century churches, true Churches of Christ follow suit. They do not have any musical instruments played during worship. They sing. They use human voices only.

I'm doing some research into this now because I've recently attending a "Bible Talk" as well as a "Devotional" with an associated group. I was just trying to find out more about the particular church by researching it, and I became disheartened and a bit frightened to discover some of this stuff. The atmosphere was different from the church I usually attend and every other church I've ever been to. I know this question is 2 years old, so maybe you have more answers than I do now.

Yes this is considered a cult. This is what's often refered to as the Boston sect of the Church of Christ. This group watches over your personal behavior and will show up to your house to monitor you. Avoid them. They have somehow strayed from the path laid out in the Bible. The "Church of Christ" is the non-cult church. The only other name you will usually see with its title is the name of the town its located in or the street its located on.

From what I understand if I am thinking of the right church here is that they believe VERY strongly that you will not go to heaven unless you are water baptised.

I think that that may technically qualify them as a cult. This flies in the face of Romans 10:9,10 that says you just have to believe that Jesus is the saviour in your heart and also where Jesus said if you confess me before men then I will confess you before my father in heaven.

I have personal experience with these guys. One guy was in my US military history class at CSUF and I was in a group project with him. I think he was part of the LA Church of Christ.

Well he agressively pursued me to try to get me to call him and become friends with him and go to his bible study. I was so turned off by his aggressive and manipulative tactics. He gave me his number which I didn't ask for and then when I saw him in the halls he would be like "why haven't you called me?"

Like I was being mean or something. Guilt tactic.

Also I could tell that he felt that only his bible study was the only valid or truthful one out there and me going to Calvary Chapel I was in error and didn't have salvtion.

From what I have heard this is not uncommon

They are a cult and they are not christian! I
was a member of that cult for a short time,
until the Holy Sprit pull me out and set me
in the right church.

God Bless
