My black cats have been named Cinders (3) and Shadow (1). I also recommend trying out names and see what sticks. I wanted to call my Abyssinian "Mercedes". She ignored me completely until I asked her, "So what is your name, Merry Beri?" She jumped up on the bed and gave me a nose kiss. And that was that.
