They were atheist or agnostic free-thinkers but how can people who do so much for humanity be damned to hell? Maybe there is no hell and if people only do good things for a reward or because they fear punishment then is that crazy?

"The Bible is not my book nor Christianity my profession. I could never give assent to the long, complicated statements of Christian dogma." - Abraham Lincoln, American president (1809-1865).

Yes, but according to them so is Gandhi, Confucius, Darwin, Edgar Allan Poe, Elizur Wright (abolitionist), Mark Twain, Thomas Paine and Voltaire among others. So they are in good company.
Ted Bundy was "saved" shortly before execution, so he is in Heaven. As are most of the dead KKK members.
Guess where I'd rather be.
God- Helen Keller was an advocate of birth control and helped found the ACLU. Oh and she was most definitely an atheist.
Earl- More quotes from Einstein. The next time you want to know what Einstein said, read a biography on him instead of just taking what your church or a religious website tells you as the gospel truth. "I believe in Spinoza's God who reveals himself in the orderly harmony of what exists, not in a God who concerns himself with the fates and actions of human beings."
"I cannot imagine a God who rewards and punishes the objects of his creation, whose purposes are modeled after our own -- a God, in short, who is but a reflection of human frailty. Neither can I believe that the individual survives the death of his body, although feeble souls harbor such thoughts through fear or ridiculous egotisms."
"seems to me that the idea of a personal God is an anthropological concept which I cannot take seriously. I also cannot imagine some will or goal outside the human sphere.... Science has been charged with undermining morality, but the charge is unjust. A man's ethical behavior should be based effectually on sympathy, education, and social ties and needs; no religious basis is necessary. Man would indeed be in a poor way if he had to be restrained by fear of punishment and hope of reward after death."

I think it depends on what YOU believe. I think that if you don't believe in hell, it doesn't exist for you. Fine and dandy, but neither does heaven. It all comes down to faith, huh? I'd personally like to believe that these that you have mentioned WILL get some eternal reward for the good they have done while alive. Nobody is all good or all bad, and if you lead a "good" life and better those around you, shouldn't you be rewarded? Great question.

To be more accurate, I think Ben Franklin was a Deist. I'm not for certain, though.

But to answer the question, if those people are in Hell (assuming such a place exists), then I think I'll go down there for moral support.

Albert Einstein in hell, nuclear bomb hell. After one bomb explodes, the others go on. This is because he signed a letter to President FDR to start nuclear program. Master Chin Kung confirmed that Einstein is currently in hell. What a pity.

Wel, hell would at least provide some interesting intelligent conversation, while heaven would be full of Bible-thumping fundies. Even with the lake of fire, I'd take the former.

I'm sorry, there is a Hell and it's reserved for those who would presume to put us in it. At least I hope so because that would be divine justice.

Blessed Be!
