Being the GL model, I'm assuming it's an automatic. The auto trannies on those do NOT last longer than 100k typically. The cost to replace: 2k-5k, depending on how much you get ripped off. I would never of bought it knowing that. The only nice Contour is an actual SVT since it's a standard and the V6.

If the car was a collectible type, like a classic Mustang, yea I'd put 2 grand in it. But it's a 10 yr old Contour, no1 is ever going to offer you a pile of $ for it. Best to just keep driving it like it is and save for another car, not necessarily a new one, just 1 newer than what you've got.

They might have only been offered 500 or less from a dealership so they are trying to sell it on their own. My 1998 car was traded in for only 500 bucks recently. Anyway bring something with you to meet them. Say you want to meet them in front of a local police station only. When you meet with them ask to see a license AND another piece of ID (credit card, anything that has the same name on it). Look at the title and make sure their name is ON the title or else it is a scam if someone else's name is on the title. Ask to bring it to a local mechanic to examine it before agreeing to buy it. Do NOT buy it without having a licensed mechanic (NOT THEM) inspect the car! It may cost a lot to fix. This is why you have a licensed mechanic (might have to pay a mechanic 100 bucks or so but it is worth it!) inspect it. So you can ask them 1) what is wrong with it 2) how much would all the work probably cost you and 3) should you buy it for 750 dollars? is it worth it? If the owner wont let you bring it to a local mechanic then do not buy it. ANY mechanic shop would inspect it if you walk in and say hey I need someone to inspect a used car for me and how much would the cost? When you respond to their ad say that someone tried to sell you a car that wasn't in their name before. So you are a little cautious now and would like to meet with them in front of the local police station (look up the address yourself of the police station they agree to meet at). If they refuse or make up a story how that is inconvenient for them then DO NOT BUY THE CAR cause they are most likely scammers!

Well, do you have any idea what it takes to put a new engine in that car? well, first off the motor comes out through the bottom of the car (kind a like a fiero, does the back of that. But , through the front of course.)I would say buy a new car. My wife has one and it is not a car all mechanics can even comprehend. So, look into a honda civic or something like that.
