If you are diagnosed with depression you and your doc will work together to determine what might be the best med to try and if that doesn't work he will try something else. All meds have side effects not just Effexor so give whatever med your doc decides to try a chance and if it doesn't work or has side effects you can't handle call him and let him know.

I have been on effexor for a few years now, it has been OK for me. I have found with effexor and prozac that they didn't seem to work very well, but, when the doctor increased the dosage I did much better. I am on 225 mg of effexor. You have to be careful of some of the stories that you hear. Listen, be warned, but make your own decision. Many of the bad stories of some of these antidepressants are from patients that were under prescribed by a gp, a psychiatrist is the specialist in this area so is much better at prescribing the right strength and the drug itself. I have always found a private psychiatrist much better then the ones at the mental health clinic.

The issue with Effexor is that if and when you discontinue it, you can have some intense symptoms that we call 'discontinuation syndrome'. For some reason, this medication has a more dramatic discontinuation than many of the others. This is not something the manufacturer is likely to make clear in their information.

Effexor is a very effective antidepressant, and works for many people when an SSRI does not. There is no reason not to use it as long as you are aware of the need to taper off of it slowly.

Your prescriber will probably know this, just don't stop it yourself without supervision. But that goes for most medications, you should always taper off slowly unless you are having severe side effects.

All the best,
Karen

If I were you I would research it so you can know everything about it yourself. A great website for this would be www.webmd.com , an of course have a long talk with your doctor too.

Personally I currently am taking Effexor and have been over a year now. I have tried many others, but this one works the best for me. I have had no side effects from it, and my Doctor assures me it has very minimal side effects, especially compared to the other medications in it's class.
I hope this helps, good luck to you.

Effexor is a medication that targets three neurotransmitters, serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine, although it only affects dopamine at the higher dosages.

In targetting 3 rather than just one neurotransmitter it is unlike the SSRI medications Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft.

After taking it for a while it can have unpleasant withdrawal side effects if you come off it suddenly and most people have to taper off slowly.

You can visit the manufacturer's website for information. All medications have their drawbacks, even aspirin. There are lots of antidepressants and it is not uncommon that 2 or 3 have to be tried before finding one that works for you. Efflexor is one of the newer antidepressants. As such usually having fewer side effects than most of the older ones.

If you can avoid antidepressants .. do so. If you and your doc think that you need them. Well then take them.

I have not faired well on them. doing ok now.

The last round, and I think it was Effexor .. I felt euphoric the first few days, then mildly buzzed afterwards. And it hit my sex drive -- The first few days it was great, and then afterwards I felt almost no desire while I was on the drug.

All medications effect different people in different ways and what may work for one person, don't work for another. This is an issue that you should discuss with your Dr
