Given the fact that many of the books within the Bible contradict themselves and leave out information (think about Jesus' lost years) in order to fulfill the Church's need to control the commoners, I would say that in terms of before the Bible, the world was a lot better. It was not so fraught with religous zealots that take every word of Christian propaganda to an extreme that fulfills a non-God-like need of control of the masses.

If you will notice, there was a lot that happened in the world before Moses wrote the first four books of the bible. There was a lot of violence and there was a lot of peacefulness. One thing for sure though, whenever the children of the righteous bloodline of Adam and Eve through Seth strayed away from God's law they got into serious trouble until they cried out to God to rescue them.

Before the books, there were still religions. They were based in oral traditions, passed down from generation to generation of *holy man* *priest* *medicine man* *magician* ect.
Some of these stories and traditions were recorded as soon as people figured out how to write. They were no less a permanent part of the culture before they were written down.

The Books of Moses (Pentateuch) indicate that before Moses wrote down what he did, God had been communicating with individuals. So, no, it's not necessary that before religious writings were written that everything was morally chaotic.

simple - oral traditions. Look at the American Indians. They have creation myths and gods, they just didn't write them down.
