I was wondering if you think I should see a doctor about depression. I've never been diagnosed with it before. I've been feeling very down for the past 1 1/2 years but I thought it was just due to my parents divorce/family issues. But it just seems to be getting worse. Usually during the summer I do all kinds of stuff but now I am always tired and never want to get out of bed because I can't fall asleep at night. I don't feel like eating as much either. Also I cut myself. I'm only 13, yes I know it's bad. What do you think? Thanks

You need to see a therapist and a doctor or a psychiatrist. You will most likely need therapy along with medication. Depression is generally caused by a situation like an emotionally difficult childhood or a more current negative event. It could very well have started with your family issues. It is probably important to deal with these issues in the company of a therapist so you can resolve them. Sleep and eating issues are typically depression related. Once you are on medication, these should improve.

Cutting requires therapy. Make sure your therapist has experience treating clients with cutting issues. They are less frequent than depression issues. Every therapist has worked with depressed patients.

I would suggest visiting your family doctor and a counselor or psychiatrist. Please also fill your parents in on how you feel. I've been through the same type of feelings myself. You'll feel better if your folks know if for no other reason than you won't feel you need to hide it. It's never a bad thing to feel bad, but please do something to try and get over it. There could be a physical reason for it. Or it could be just part of growing up. Growing up is never easy, and you'll need as much help as you can get. I hope that you have at least one true friend that you trust and can talk with. I have one myself, and it helps me immensely. I would have a very tough time without her to talk to. The key to it all is make sure that you find a doctor and a friend that you trust, or none of it will do any good. I hope that all goes well, and that you can become very happy.

It might be time to see someone to help with what you've got going on. It seems that if you think its getting worse then, by all means, see a professional. If you don't take care of you, no one is. Is your cutting the result of you trying to deal with your parents divorce, or is it something else?

Depression is not something to be ashamed of. If treated properly, your life can be very stable. If you had the courage to step out online and lay something very personal about yourself for the world to read, then YOU have the strength to do what you need for you. See a professional so that he/she might get you started on some anti depressants, and that you can deal with what is inside of you. You are young and have the rest of your life to make it anything you want it be.

Hang in ther and good luck

Because it has been ongoing for more than 1-1/2 years, you should see a doctor. The fact that you cut yourself makes the condition urgent. If you lack finances for a private doctor, contact your county or state mental health department. Without treatment, it will only get worse. With treatment you will likely see improvement in 30 to 90 days.

Please see a doctor, there is no need to suffer like this. You need professional help and the relief you will get is something you can't even imagine right now. Just like any other disease, depression is very serious, but can be treated with therapy and/or medication, and be completely eliminated. Please do this for yourself, you are so worth it. You have so many things ahead of you to be excited and happy about, so don't delay another day! I wish you the best of luck and a speed recovery!

You are most definately depressed and the cutting thing worries the mess out of me. Your parents must have no idea about that. You need to talk to them and get help. There are tons of anti-depressants that can make you feel better---to take the edge off. I had to get on one several years ago and it really helped. I am not on them anymore. Good luck...and tell your parents. That is not fair to yourself or them. They love you
