The answer to your question is found in the story of Lazarus (the beggar) and the rich man.

Notice that Jesus says that there was a certain man named Lazarus. This means that it was not a parable.

Both went to Hades. Hades, up until the time when Jesus was raised from the dead, was comprised of Sheol - a place of torment, and Abrahams Bosom - paradise.

Old Covenant Saints went to Paradise (where Jesus said the thief on the cross would go). Those that were not faithful, went to Sheol (like the rich man).

Sheol is hot. You remember your life. You experience your 5 senses (thirst). You actually know more than you did when you were on earth (the rich man recognized Abraham, whom he had never met).

This changed some when Jesus was raised from the dead. He took those in Paradise (Abraham's Bosom) with Him when He went to Heaven. So, it is empty today.

For the most part, many people will now call Hades - Sheol --- Hell.

But, Hell is the Lake of Fire where those in Sheol will be sent after the great judgment of God.

At that time, Sheol will be emptied, Abraham's Bosom will be emptied and all will be either in Heaven (or on earth), or the Lake of Fire.
