Okay this isn't meant to be a bashfest and it's not a bad thing but has anyone noticed that Catholics seem to be wild partiers out of church. It's funny because they seem the most traditional and strict but I have quite a few friends that are Catholic and they are wild. They drink a ton and party like crazy which I never would have expected. I just found it funny because before I would have thought of Catholics as very clean cut and strict.

Yeah I understand it may be because the friends I am talking about are in their early 20's but their parents are the same way and a lot of people that go to the same Catholic church. I'm not trying to hate on them or stereotype I just thought it was a funny observation and wanted to see if anyone else noticed the same thing.

It doesnt matter what 'denomination' people attend... untill they surrender their lives to Jesus Christ, they are just in a 'club' rather than true Christians.... Jesus said, confess and repent and sin no more.... not 'ok, you are good for the week, have fun and do what you want til that next obligatory hour next weekend'
my husband was born into a 'catholic' family... and every one of his siblings (he is one of 9 kids) has alcohol issues... and now that dh doesnt drink any alcohol since turning his life over to Christ, he is kind of the outcast.... they wanna party til oblivion every time they go out, and then just confess when they get the chance, only to do it again and again... there is no repentance

I feel that it is individuals who are at fault. Many believers of all denominations are "Sunday Christians", who go to services because they have been instucted to do so, but fail to live out their Christian duties when they leave the church parking lot.
Two Catholics that I was good friends with are prime examples of "bad Catholics" that you speak of. As a Protestant, I was very turned off by their repulsive actions, but I later realized that I cannot let the few ruin it for the rest. Most Catholics try to lead good lives to attain salvation by grace through works. Not all of them go "wild and crazy" outside of chruch, only a minority.

Sometimes the strictest of rules creates the craziest rebels.
I've known some women who were the utmost of pious Catholics in high school. But when they were released into college without parental supervision, they were finally able to explore their own personalities rather than rely on a church or their parents.
Sadly, this exploration was not always healthy. Since their parents would only teach them abstinence and not responsibility, some of them women did contract STDs or became pregnant and had to drop out.
I know that some parents feel like they're doing their children a favor by sheltering them, but sometimes the end result is much, much worse.
I've seen this with equally oppressive religions, such as Baptist and Mormon, as well, but perhaps it's more noticeable with Catholicism because there are more followers.

do not generalize. if you see your catholics friends as wild partiers.. does that make them less of a person? i think not everybody is free to do whatever he/she wants regardless of what religion they believe in. as long as they do not hurt anybody...i think that's ok. sticking traditional and strict belief are for the oldies. me, as a catholic..yes i used to party and yes.. drink like crazy too.. but that's a phase in life i have to go thru. it taught me to be a better person.. how? by drinking less and moderately..not to abuse myself..we are but humans and every mistake we do should serve as a lesson and that's a personal opinion.

I just love your stereotyping. I hardly drink at all. Possibly one glass of wine a month.
Maybe you just hang with the wrong people.
I could indicate Catholics who have recently been chastised publically for breaking church rules, but I won't(johnkerry).
For drunkeness, but I won't (tedkennedy).
For philandering, but I won't (tedkennedyjohnkennedy)
But the same can be said of others, but I won't(billclinton).
The point is, no group of people or person is free from imperfection. The biggest lushes I know are agnostics. Whaddya think o' them apples?

There are plenty of "lapsed Catholics" who disregard the teachings of the Church (if they even bother to find out what the Catholic Church teaches).
Most of my practicing Catholic friends drink little or no alcohol .
We do like to celebrate and do not see creation as evil.
check out the Catechism of the Catholic Church esp. paragraph2290
