"Misconception #4: Islam degrades women

Even though many aspects of Islam are misunderstood by non-Muslims, the ignorance, misinformation and incorrect assumptions that are made in regards to Islam's treatment of women are probably the most severe. Numerous verses of the Qur'an make it clear that men and women are equal in the site of God. According to the teachings of Islam, the only thing that distinguishes people in the site of God is their level of God-consciousness. Due to this, many people are surprised to find out that Islamic Law guaranteed rights to women over 1400 years ago that women in the Europe and America only obtained recently. For example, Islam clearly teaches that a woman is a full-person under the law, and is the spiritual equal of a male. Also, according to Islamic Law, women have the right to own property, operate a business and receive equal pay for equal work.

Women are allowed total control of their wealth, they cannot be married against their will and they are allowed to keep their own name when married. Additionally, they have the right to inherit property and to have their marriage dissolved in the case of neglect or mistreatment. Also, Islam does not consider woman an "evil temptress", and thus does not blame woman for the "original sin". Women in Islam participate in all forms of worship that men participate in. Actually, the rights that Islam gave to women over 1400 years ago were almost unheard of in the West until the 1900s. Less than fifty years ago in England and America, a woman could not buy a house or car without the co-signature of her father or husband! Additionally, Islam gives great respect to women and their role in society --- it gives them the right to own property, marry who they want and many other rights.

Also, it should be mentioned that the Prophet Muhammad's mission stopped many of the horrible practices in regards to women that were present in the society of his time. For example, the Qur'an put an end to the pagan Arab practice of killing their baby daughters when they were born. Additionally, Islam put restrictions on the unrestricted polygamy of the Arabs of the time, and put many laws in place to protect the well-being of women. Today, most of the so-called reforms in the status of women came about after the West abandoned religion for secularism. Even those in the West who claim to follow the so-called "Judeo-Christian tradition" really follow the values of Western liberalism --- but just to a lesser degree than their more liberal countrymen. If women in the Muslim World today don't have their rights, it is not because Islam did not give them to them. The problem is that in many places alien traditions have come to overshadow the teachings of Islam, either through ignorance or the impact of Colonialization.

Woah, here you are trying to educate people about Islam and trying to clear up a misconception, yet virtually none of the answers were positive! I can see what you meant when people just don't want to learn, and are satisfied with what they "know" as I have made this point several times as well. Do these people CHOOSE to be ignorant? Not one answer showed that someone learned, although I am sure deep inside most of the answerers read things they never imagined they would read about the truth about Muslim women. All of the answerers, instead of absorbing this knowledge, insisted on countering your information with lies, false information, exaggerated information, and ignorant remarks. Even I as a Muslim learned a thing or two, yet these people who have little to no knowledge about the truth of Islam still insist that the information you supply is wrong. However, we as Muslims must remain strong.

Ray:

Men do have their Hijab as well. They must cover from their naval to their knees. Why do women have to cover more, you ask? Men are much more likely to act on their urges than women, and all aspects of a woman's body can tempt these urges. This is not very much so in the opposite situation. You claim that "that moahmmed guy say half the people in hell are women". Well thats half, so the other half must be men, its really not that hard to figure out! Once again, demonstrates the equality of men and women in Islam. When praying, men and women are segregated. Therefore, if a woman walks in front of a man while praying, then something went wrong way before the praying even started. And people shouldn't be walking around in front of people whhile they pray anyway. Now that that's understood, if a MAN walks in front of another man (because that is the only possibility assuming everything is happening accordingly and properly), the prayer doesn't count. So having a "chick" walking in front of you is virtually out of the question. Did you ever study the Qu'ran, or seek the truth about Islam (not what you see on the news or read in the newspaper--the media is the worst source when it comes to the truth about Islam!)? makes me wonder sometimes

I accept all of what you said except the last part....the current treatment of muslim women did not come about because of "alien" conditions...indicating something outside the arab culture brought it into Islam(as we know that arab and Islamic culture are nearly one and the same)....because all the negative practices associated with Islam today have their origins in the deserts of arabia and were all ready in practice when the prophet received the message. he did his best to iradicate those degrading practices towards women...but not long after he passed on many of those practices came back into style ....and have never gone out apparently.

Not necessarily under Sura law. If a woman inherits from a dead husband they can let her control it or a Sura court can appoint a male member of her family to supervise or the Court itself can supervise.

Victims of rape (women) are often held partially accountable for the incident and beaten, not as much as the rapist, but still the victim is beaten.

The Quran specifically forbids a woman to dispute the amount of her inhertiance.

If a man decides to give all to the Son and only $1 to the wife and $1 to the daughter, they have to live with this fact.

Women must dress in accordance with the Quran. This is not an option.

Hence women ARE definately restricted by the religion. This is not an issue of debate it is directly found in the Quran and to question the Quran or change it is a violation of the rules.

I think there a lots of pretty Muslim women. I've never known one personally but if they shed some of their clothes including the mask, I'm pretty sure many are attractive. But I feel sorry for many who are degraded by their men counterparts against their will.

in addition to forced burkah wearing there are many ways in islam where women are second class,
here are just some examples
women in an islamic court of law have ONLY 1/2 the voice of a man... (not very fair)
a woman can only marry ONE husband, while a man can have FOUR wives (again not very fair)
a man can marry a woman of ANY religion he wants too, a woman MUST marry a muslim man..
thus indeed women are NOT equal to men, spirtually or otherwise in islam.

I think Deazone caught you in the act.
I also think you are kidding yourself. I'll bet you live in the United States, or maybe the U.K. ...you probably don't live in a Muslim nation.
Now, why does the tune "I'm Only a Bird in a Gilded Cage" keep running through my mind?
