Yes, the waiter may be paying for someone elses screw up. What you did is lied. The waiter got in trouble because you lied and that is a very bad thing. A waiter is a person like any other trying to live. What if he/she has a family and that family depends on that money to eat and pay rent. What about the emotional hardship that person goes through. I mean is one thing to pay for your crime but is another to pay for a crime you did not comit. What you did is very bad and inconsiderate. Also very selfish. All you had to do is complaint about the wrong order and the restaurant would had given you the right order. You would not have to pay for something you did not order. Imagine if we all slash out at everybody we encounter for the most insignificant things. It would be a war zone. You couldn't even breath without annoying someone. Not a good way to live. The least you can do is call the restaurant and explain to the manager that you lied. Maybe not give your name but at least it will clear the waiters name.

Believe me, I am always posting questions about the negative customer service experiences that happen to me...but they actually happen. I would never lie to a manager. Before I complain, I also walk away from the situation and think if it justifies me filing a complaint by emailing the company or whatever. But you should never make up anything outrageous like that if it did not happen. You should feel really guilty. You knew nothing about this waiter's personal situation. He more than like REALLY needed that job. What if he had children to support, rent to pay, sick parents to buy medication for? You don't know. What comes around goes around. There is plenty of injustices or poor customer service to complain about; don't make up stuff that didn't happen. You should probably go to the restaurant and explain to the manager what happened.

You need to explain this to the restaurant manager asap. Not only did you cause an innocent person to lose their job, whoever was responsible for getting your order wrong is still there!! (I assume that a prep person or a cook is responsible)
Not only that, this waiter needs to list this employer when he is looking for another job. The way it sits right now, he will receive a bad review and make it difficult for him to find another position. By calling and explaining it, he might get his job back, or he might get a decent review.
But for the most part, the main thing that should happen, is you should grow up and realize that your actions affect other people. There is more to the world that what revolves around you. Make it right.

Well, yes. What you could do is go back to the restaraunt, explain to the manager what happened, and they'll proabably give him his job back. If it wasn't the waiter's fault, then it's completely unfair for him to get fired. You could tell the manager that you were upset about the order, and explain you were frustrated, but I really think you should try to put it right. I know it's embarrassing to admit that, but it's the right thing to do. You may want to apologise to the waiter as well.

By posting this question it already shows you have remorse, I'm surprised you did it though. I mean things happen and maybe you weren't having such a good day, but for your lie it caused a person to lose their job. What if you were in their shoes, bet you wouldn't want to get fired for saying something you never said. It's not about how you feel or if you should feel bad, what do you feel for that waiter? How can you help him now?

YES! You need to contact the manager and explain that you were having a really bad day and took it out on the unfortunate waiter. Apologize profusly and never darken their doors again.

I hope there are still people in this world who know when they don't do the right thing and will make the time to fix it and make amends. I think you can do that. It's bad Karma, too. If you want to feel better you have to make it right or it will come back to you...it always does. Go and set the record straight and apologize. I agree that the manager should have investigated further. Do it for yourself.

You should check and really see if he got fired. If he did get fired, there are probably other reasons for it.
If a customer came up to me and told me that happened, I would be nice and apologize. I would not necessarily believe the customer, especially if they were talking about one of my best employees. (I would act like I believed the customer)
On the other hand, if a customer said that and it was an employee I would like to get rid of anyway, I would use the situation to fire him. I still would not necessarily believe the customer.
