My denomination doesn't require headcoverings anymore, and hasn't in quite a long time, but a few women do opt to wear chapel veils or hats during church services. And many of my Mennonite and Brethren friends do wear headcoverings.

Some people like to quote 1 Corinthians 11:5:
But every woman that prayeth or prophesieth with her head uncovered dishonoureth her head: for that is even all one as if she were shaven.
But it's like they stopped reading there. Here's what 1 Corinthians 11:15 says:
But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering.
You don't need to cover your hair but if you do that's not a sin either.
Also there is alot of Christian modesty in the world. Just take a look at these links (the links for clothing are at the bottom but there are articles at the top):

I dont really see the Virgin Mary as anyone out of the oridnary, but i do agree that all women should be respected afterall if we did not have women there would be no human existance. Women are one of the most sacred parts of our existance, if not the most important part. A person shouldnt have to feel the need to show off what they have in hopes of catching someones attention, if a person is modest and shows whats on the inside the outside shouldnt matter. As long as people are not forced into wearing something to hide who they are or to show off a certain part of them then its fine. A Hijab is not immoral, oppression or something that hides the fact that the person behind it is still a person and a woman. The Hijab is a cultural thing and like culture they are things that can be chosen to be worn or not. I hold women in very high regard if not the highest regard. Being a woman alone is worthy of great respect, being a mother, wife, or whatever is worthy of even greater respect.

There are some believers who do wear head coverings to be more modest. These days there are many Christian women and young ladies that do dress modest. But then you have some that don't dress modest. I have been invited to a baptism at a church in the past and to my surprise, many of the women there were dressed so inappropriately that I really thought I was in another place of worship.
I agree with what you are saying, but I don't want to be dressed like a Muslim women covered in a Burkah from head to toe, not my belief. I just think that if we as women are coming in the presence of G-d in worship, that we should be appropriately dressed, just like the Jewish women in Israel. I too, dress modest and I am happy to say that I do like my apparel with wearing the long skirts and blouse that isn't low-cut.
On the Sabbath, I do wear a head covering out of respect.

Some do, as a matter of personal piety or devotion, even among denominations/sects where it's not required of them. Of those that do, modesty in dress -- including headcoverings -- is common among Amish and Mennonite communities. Some traditional Catholic women also cover their heads at Mass. There are undoubtedly other examples, as well.

Christian men and women are supposed to dress modestly. I wised up and stopped wearing shorts and short skirts. I wear a long skirt or dress whenever possible. (Not when I change my car's oil. :o) ) Christian women in all denominations used to cover their head for church. (I Corinthians 11) I think that the world's influence is what caused this custom to fall by the wayside. After studying 1 Corinthians 11 for several years and talking to people, I can interpret this passage in no other way than that women are to cover their head during the church service. So I do that now too. My church used to teach that women were to cover their head, but now not many do it anymore. The ones that do are mostly older women.

In my church (Italian assemblies of God) the women wear the veil. At the beginning I refused to wear it, but now I feel like naked without. I really appreciate the sisters that wear the headcovers all the day and I also now that is only their zeal to carry them to this choice. Modesty is for every christian man or woman.
The veils that these sisters decide to wear, doesn't have nothing in common with the islamic veil (in all its varying).
In the church i wear a jewish veil similar to the veil in the picture that covers all my hairs

one of the islamic veil (in the simpler and known shape)

Anothr picture that shows the type of apparel that a conservative Muslim woman decides (or is obliged) to wear (usually these women live in purdah)

My pastor just gave a sermon on this a couple of weeks ago and said that they covered their heads years ago because that was their culture. It was common practice then where it doesn't apply now because it's not our way of life. As long as we approach God with humble hearts that is what counts. I don't think modesty has anything to do with it. He said a lot more that I wish I could remember offhand but I hope this answers your question.

Yup. Especially in the church. It goes back to the idea the Watchers will corrupt you if your head is not covered. It goes for men as well. But more so for women. You turned a lot of people off referring to the Muslims. That is a choice of the woman to cover, it is frowned upon in more strict Islamic countries when they choose not to cover their heads, but they do keep a modest appearance minus the scarf.

Well, if you really accept the Bible as the infallible word of almighty God, in 1 Corinthians, Chapter 11 it says . . .
"Any man who prays or prophesies with his head covered brings shame upon his head.
5
But any woman who prays or prophesies with her head unveiled brings shame upon her head, for it is one and the same thing as if she had had her head shaved.
6
For if a woman does not have her head veiled, she may as well have her hair cut off. But if it is shameful for a woman to have her hair cut off or her head shaved, then she should wear a veil.
7
A man, on the other hand, should not cover his head, because he is the image and glory of God, but woman is the glory of man."
Now before you dash out to buy a head scarf for you girlfriend, you might want to re-read Leviticus first. (Hint: you'll probably give-up ever playing football again!)
