No BS. It is the truth. The USS LIBERTY was a U.S. Navy intelligence gathering ship - under control of the U.S. Navy not the CIA or any other "covert" organization. She was under the operational control of the Commander Sixth Fleet. Her intell reporting was made to the Director of Naval Intelligence and the NSA. She was at sea and underway in international waters near Egypt. She was flying our Nation Ensign (American Flag). After the first pass by an Israeli jet the commanding officer ordered the Holiday Colors (a very large American Flag) be hoisted as an identification aid. However, the LIBERTY was taken under fire and 34 American sailor killed and another 173 wounded. American jet were launched from (if I remember the ship correctly) the carrier USS AMERICA and were en route to the LIBERTYs position but were recalled on the orders of President Johnson. (Johnson later claimed he did it because he didn't want Egypt to think we entering the war on their side.) After the attack the LIBERTY was approached by an Israeli gunboat offering assistance. The LIBERTYs c.o. responded with the single digit salute and simple said "I think you have helped enough". They got the message and quickly departed the area. The Israeli government claimed if was a case of mistaken identity! The said they thought it was an Egyptian cargo ship - which was half the size of the LIBERTY, flew an Egyptian flag, and had Arabic markings! It was a deliberate attack. The Israeli government was concerned that the LIBERTY had monitored and recorded voice message traffic that would show the Israeli's attacked Egypt and not vice versa. The Israeli government paid about 13 million in humanitarian compensation for the victims of the attack. Jimmy Carter later accepted 6 million for the damages to the LIBERTY and surviving dependents of the murdered and casualities accepted a 3.6 million settlement with the Israeli government.

The USS Liberty (AGTR-5) was attacked by fighter jets of the Israeli Defense Forces during the Six Day War. Israel said it was a case of mistaken identity, believing the Liberty was some ship from an Arab nation. Several crew members lost their lives and others were wounded. The Liberty was essentially a seaborne platform to collect electronic intelligence. There have been unconfirmed stories that she held on her tape banks the evidence that Israel attacked first during that war and that was the reason Israel tried to sink her.
The Captain of the Liberty passed away a few years ago. In his honor, the Naval Hospital at the Marine Corps Base in 29 Palms, California was re-named for him.

Okay, it's time for a history lesson. During the Six day war Israel kicked everyone's as*. Off the coast of Lebanon was a US ship called the USS Liberty. It was an intelligence gathering vessel. The IDF attacked the Liberty because either they thought it was an enemy vessel or because the didn't want any reports getting out about where they were attacking. Remember LBJ was in the White House and you never could tell where he would come down on things like that. Note the USS Pueblo one year later off the coast of North Korea. LBJ had the resources to stop the taking of our ship but he didn't know which way to jump. Do your homework next time before you shoot your mouth off.

One important thing to remember is that the US Navy told the Israeli government that there were no US ships within 100 miles of the USS Liberty's location.
The US Navy investigation into the attack revealed that when messages were sent to all US ships to stay at least 150 miles away from the warring countries - nobody remembered to tell the spy ship.

Please read the whole chapter in the history book before you comment. The USS Liberty (operating under the control of the CIA and NOT flying the US flag) was too close to an armed conflict between Israel & everybody else. (the six days war) Isreal detected the ship, attempted to contact the ship, and when the ship did not respond to Isreals calls, Isreal attacked the ship. Only after (during) the Liberty was attacked did she identify herself as a US Warship. Once She was identified, the Isrealies called off the attack, and offered any medical assistance they could provide. The Captian of the ship refused the Isrealies help and left the combat area to get aid for his crew & ship. The Muslems had nothing to do with this.

nope, not Muslim BS. Israel DID bomb the Liberty, although they claim it was an accident. there were also delays in rescuing the survivors, which was unconscionable in my opinion.

Tell that to the survivors. And you call us un-American and accuse us of not supporting our soldiers.

It's fact, but it was an 'accident'. We don't discuss these things. Only anti-Semites use it as propaganda. You know the white supremacists, and the KKK.
