i hate grits cause they are nasty and look nasty, but exactly what are grits??? nobody has ever been able to tell me!

Grits is a type of corn porridge and a food common in the Southern United States consisting of coarsely ground corn. The grits you are referring to are most likely hominy grits. Hominy grits explicitly refers to grits made from nixtamalized corn, or hominy.
Nixtamalization is the process by which dried maize (corn) is soaked and cooked in an alkaline solution, usually limewater, to cause the transparent outer hull, the pericarp, to separate, enabling its removal from the grain. This process has several benefits including enabling the grain to be more effectively ground; increasing protein and vitamin content availability; improving flavor and aroma and reduction of mycotoxins. In the ancient Mesoamerican language Nahuatl, the word for the product of this procedure is nixtamalli or nextamalli, which is a compound of "nextli," ashes, and "tamalli," corn dough. The ancient process of nixtamalization was first developed in Mesoamerica where maize was developed. There is no precise date when the technology was developed though the earliest physical evidence points to Guatemala 1200-1500 BC. Both the ancient Aztecs and Mayans developed nixtamalization. The earliest evidence of nixtamalization is found in Guatemala's southern coast with equipment dating from 1200–1500 BC. The ancient Maya and the Aztecs used lime (calcium oxide) and ashes in creating alkaline solutions, while the tribes of North America used sodium carbonate, which occurred naturally, or ashes. The nixtamal process was very important in the early Mesoamerican diet as maize, one of the basic foods along with beans, chile peppers and squash, was deficient in essential amino acids and in niacin. A population depending on untreated maize would be malnourished and develop pellagra. Cooking with lime enables a balance of essential amino acids and makes available niacin, vitamin B3. Without the use of nixtamalization, civilization in Mesoamerica would not have existed.
Traditionally, the maize for grits is ground by a stone mill, the results being passed through screens, with the finer part being corn meal, and the coarser part being grits. Many communities in the Southern U.S. used a gristmill up until the mid-20th century, with families bringing their own corn to be ground, and the miller retaining a portion of the corn for his fee. Three-quarters of grits sold in the United States is sold in the "grits belt" stretching from Louisiana to North Carolina. South Carolina declared grits its state food in 1973.
The word "grits" comes from Old English grytta meaning a coarse meal of any kind. Yellow grits include the whole kernel, while white grits use hulled kernels. Grits is prepared by simply boiling into a porridge; normally it is boiled until enough water evaporates to leave it semi-solid. It is traditionally served during breakfast, but can be used at any meal. Some people add butter and sugar to this otherwise bland food, although purists will eat it plain.

It is ground up hominy corn. You know what Corn Nuts are, it's the same thing, only they haven't been toasted. Put alot of butter, salt and pepper on them, they're good.

corn. you can store it after u cook it, freeze it, cart it off for a snack and make grit cakes for added fun anywhere

grits are similar to cream of wheat but are not as smooth as cream of wheat.grits are made from corn
