Im curious how you pay for MA classes. A certain amout for every month, 6 months, or what?

Also, how much does it cost?

Costs vary as do what you receive for those costs. You have to shop around. Most schools will have a monthly fee that you can save some money if you pay three, six, even twelve months in advance.

My school, for example, has one of the lowest monthly rates around but we do pay a token amount for belt testing (it covers the certificate and the belt itself), dojo tournaments (to cover the insurance and awards) and special seminars once a quarter (to cover the rental of a facility and a fee for the outside instructors). Other schools you may pay more, but all of these activities are included.

My advice is to go month-to-month for the first six months or so to see if you really enjoy it.

If a school tries to get you to start off with a long term contract and says you will get your black belt during that time, run away.

Many places still have a monthly payment option as well as a discount price like a six month lump sum payment price, and even sometimes contracts also. At my school I offer all three and a student that knows he/she wants to stay can save themselves about $20.00 per month doing a year contract over the monthly, pay as you go rate, and they also get a half hour private lesson monthly and a free uniform. That all together is a fairly good savings and gets them more one-on-one time with me.

Some places do take the contracts out three or four years but that is too long and too unpredictable of a length of time for anyone so I don't offer any contract longer than 12 months. It pays to shop if looking for a school and instructor and I don't recommend anyone signing anything long term until they have watched a few classes and talked to the instructor and students. That way you will be better informed and more prepared to make a smart or good decision and not buy or obligate yourself to something that you later find out you don't want. Price wise it also depends on what part of the country and location of where you are looking for classes or a school so shop around.

The place I go is considered the most expensive in Oklahoma and its about 85 to 100 a month for unlimited classes. This is because we get lots of fights because of the caliber of the team but most places are around 25-45 a month and there not bad places to start.

Like everyone else said, pretty much, if it's part of your college course while you have TA or the GI Bill or are in the ROTC, then sure they'll pay for it. Otherwise, the most you'll get is the Modern Army Combatives training, which is almost the exact same as MMA. There are two types of combatives you'll learn. There's the normal MAC which is like MMA in that it mixes wrestling, judo, khung fu, whatever else is in there, then there's the actual man-to-man combat combatives in which they'll teach you pretty much how to keep the fight from ever escalating as far as MMA; things like muzzle strikes, keeping distance, getting someone off your rifle or yourself if they grab at you, etc.

I own a school and the most expensive tuition I have is $80/month for my after school program. My 'normal' tuition is $65/mo, with discounts for term agreements. I don't force term agreements, and those that sign them have plenty of 'outs' to get away from them, if necessary.
