im 5'10", 240 lbs and im still not sure what heavy bag lbs should i get.

so far i made a homemade bag that works pretty well but i want to seriously get a real one.

because my ceilings are weak, im planning on getting a heavy bag with a wall mount so the wall can hold it. in all it will cost about 160 bucks if i get an 100 lbs bag.

the other one i might get is a free standing bag that i fill with sand on the bottom.

which should i get? im planning on putting the wall one outside.

the only places i can shop at is big 5, sports chalet, and southern california based stores. if u can find me a good price i would appreciate it. thx.

also, where can i get sand?

I got an 80 lb bag from Play It Again Sports. The store I stopped at sold them new. You can buy the sand at Home Depot or Lowes. They sell 50 lb bags of it for around $2-$5.

You don't hang a bag from a plaster ceiling, you hang it from the ceiling joists above the ceiling or floor joists above, if in a basement although both can cause structural damage from all the swinging, swaying and bouncing around that they can do during a vigorous workout if they are not reinforced. I hang mine only from steel central beams. If you have a basement I would go with a free standing floor one filled with sand on a piece of indoor/outdoor carpeting. One of these on a regular floor can cause some damage to your floors also because that is 160-200 lbs of something that is banging on your floor over a period of time so you may need to be careful. A 50lb bag of sand at most hardware stores goes for $7.00-$9.00 per bag. Also if you go with a floor bag you could put it outside and remove the pad and take it in after your workouts and leave the base outside. They slide on and off very easily and then it won't get ruined by the weather. Century Martial Arts makes some good ones and if you inquire about establishing a wholesale account you may find that you can get a good bag and some other equipment for wholesale as opposed to buying your bag somewhere else and paying retail.

My favorite bags are the real long ones. because you can practice traditional striking but also throw in leg kicks and rib kicks. Fairtex and Century make a good one. they weigh quite a bit though. I bought a free standing bag rack and it was only 129 from academy sports and you hang the bag on the front and the back has a nice speed bag setup. I think those long ones are called banana bags?
