Hello. I've wanted to join the U.S. Marine Corps for a long time now. I have hypothyroidism and I take medication for it. I take a very light dosage and it's easily controllable. Is this disqualifying? Is there any way to get in?

You'll have to go talk to a recruiter to get a definitive answer, because I'd assume you'd need a medical waiver for such a problem.

Hypothyroidism is waiverable. You will need all your meidcal records and lab work for submission. Take them with you when you go to the recruiter so they can send them to MEPS for a prescreen by the MEPS doctor. I had a 60/40 split with getting people in so you have a good chance.

You would have to get a waiver because when I took my physical, the MEPS Dr. saw that I have a big scar on my stomach, and I had to get the papers from the hospital, and my recruiter had to fax it to the MEPS Dr. and he had to decide if I was medically cleared to join (in which I was). You have a good chance of joining though. Good luck and God bless.

Current hypothyroidism not controlled by medication is disqualifying. This is apparently not your case.

They are having a hard time getting people to join!! They will take you, use you, abuse you and then disgard you!! I was on my last tour before retiring when they decided to down size the army,, I got ousted to save them retirement money!! It is no longer a good place for a career,, and then look what they do to all us disabled vets!! We are scum not worth considering anymore,, Walter Reed isn't the only hospital that is below standard. Our polticians don't care about you after they use you for their war that they get rich on,, and you lose everything...

Your best bet would be to go talk to a recruiter.
