I bought a car a month ago from a used car dealership in which I paid for the car by check (full amount). He said he was going to wait to give me the title because he wanted to make sure the check cleared. Well its been just over a month now and he hasnt sent the title to me. My buddy at work told me that a dealer can get in big trouble for not making sure I get the title in the 30-day period. Is this true? What are the consequences the dealer can be held against for this? Would it allow me to return the car for my money back? I live in Kansas, not sure what the laws are here about it. Thanks.

Have you called the dealer to ask about the title. It is quite possible that they have it, and are waiting for you to come in and get it. Many dealers do not normally mail titles, they have the customer come in and physically get it. They may want you to sign a receipt that you have received the title, or you may need to sign the title or reassignment!

If the dealer can not deliver marketable title, you may be able to cancel the sale, but until you contact the dealer, you do not know what the problem is!

Call them in the morning!

The dealer doesn't send the title to you, he sends it to DMV, they will create a new title in your name. The process can take up to 90 days so just be a little patient. You have a temporary registration so nothing to worry about unless you're now selling the car. Call the dealer and verify that they sent the title to DMV.
Your freind is wrong, there is no 30 day limitation.

If this was legit dealer, he should be licensed and bonded by the state. Attempt to contact the dealer. If you get nowhere with him, contact your state attorney general and department of motor vehicle, they will help put pressure on him and help you out.
As a dealer, sometimes because of bank payoffs that are out of state, getting titles can take some time. Give him the benefit of doubt. Talk to the dealer first, then go to the state.

Go by the dealership and remind him you have not recieved the title. Be sure he dates it for the current date so that you will not be penalized for not registring your car with the prescribed time
