Why isn't deer meat (venison) sold widely in grocery stores and meat markets?

Deer are range animals, they roam wild, not domesticated.
They're protected from hunters, the season is short.
The numbers are limited, hunting is restricted most places.
They are subject to infectious bugs & parasites.
Only the back legs have any decent amount of meat.

It is just not widely availbale. Hunting season is only a couple of months every year. Deer would have to be farmed like beef cattle, or stores would only have fresh meat during hunting season. I don't think stores could get enough in their stores to sell to many people. Some meat markets and butchers in Montana (where I'm from originally) did sell some, probably what they had personally hunted.

Lack of factory farming. Little bit harder to get hold of something to butcher if it is trotting around the great outdoors. Trust me, not every country in the world is squeemish about eating something that tasty but cute and even there it's not exactly easy to find game meat.

I like homemade deer jerky the best. Deer burger is okay, I don't like elk meat though.

It has to be FDA approved and they will not approve it to be sold like that.some butcher shops do sell it but that is because when people go there to have it made up in what ever way they want it,alot do not come back for it and that's the only way they can sell it

It is where they are raised as a crop e.g. New Zealand.

If you allow game on the market it'll be harvested to extinction. Much like has happened to sea species.
