NO. You do NOT need 8 glasses of water a day. This silly piece of health advice came about because reporters took a recommendation from a nutritionist out of context. The nutritionist who was mis-quoted has been trying ever since to tell people that the way the message was reported on is completely incorrect.

Juice, coffee, and other liquids are fine to assure you are properly hydrated. Of course, under strenuous workout, and high temperatures, you need to make sure you drink plenty of liquids. But the 8-glasses-of-water-a-day is an urban legend created by overzealous reporters.

[edit]: I can see that the gullible will attempt to keep this myth alive. To see the science of my answer for yourself, see:

No. 8 glasses of water a day means 8 glasses of water a day for 175lbs 5 ft 10 in male. (Typically viewed as a norm).

If you are 7'1" and weigh 350 lbs, you obviously need more.
If you are 4'11" and weigh 95lbs, you could do without less.

It's all relative. Drink as much as possible in a manner that you are comfortable with. Lemonade and such should only be counted as a partial amount. Higher the calories the liquid has, less it should count as a water replacement. Rule of thumb, if it has more than 100 calories a glass. Don't count it at all.

Good health to you.

Water is the best substance for hydrating yourself. The reason being that it has no "additives". Besides, human beings naturally need water to survive. But 8 glasses isn't necessary; it's only recommended. Different people need different amounts of water every day depending on their activities, physiology, medical conditions, etc. In other words, some people need more than 8 glasses of water per day, and others need less.

A box of juice is seldom equivalent to a cup of water because it has other contents. And don't forget that juice has sugar too, that means that you take in lots of sugar (perhaps too much), if you drink an equivalent of 8 glasses of juices or iced tea per day.

Yes. Water is what 80% of our body is made up of. Most of our blood is made up of water and our other bodily fluids. No that does not count. Has to be plain water. Anything add, sugars or salt combind to the H2O and forms a whole new compound. You need just plain water. The best is natural spring water. Glass over plastic bottle. Our input should equal our out put. Urine, sweat, etc. They need to be replaced so everything function correctly.

You really do need 8 glasses a day if you're an adult. I suppose it still counts if you put in powder to flavor it, but if you're going for the full effect leave out the powder and chug that water!

first, it has to be water, not just fluids as your body is 75%water, not 75% juice, understand? and the new way that it is measured, and what most people don't know, is that you have to drink your weight in ounces of water, so say you weigh 160 lbs., that means you must drink 160 ounces of water, which turns out to be 16 cups (8 ounces in a cup), or approximatly 1 gallon.

hope it helps...

there is no reason you could not add crystal light to water if it gets you to drink more of it. tea is a natural diuretic so add a few more glasses of water if you drink a lot of it
