Carlos Hathcock, best sniper in US Marine history used a bolt action rifle that was terrible by modern standards and still routinely made one shot kills at 1000 yards. He used a Winchester model 70 chambered in .30/06 with an 8 power scope. His rifle had a pitted barrel and would only shoot 2 inch groups at 100 yards. It's not so much the rifle, but the person shooting it that counts.
I have a Ruger model 77 in .223 that does groups better than 1/2 inch at 100 yards, and a few more good rifles that do almost as well. Go get a Ruger 77, stainless steel barrel with a synthetic stock in .308. Put a decent 4-12x40 scope on it. I like Bushnell scopes but there are many other good brands. Put a sling on the rifle. I use a straight nylon one, nothing fancy. Then go practice, and know that it is you that determine how well the rifle shoots far more than all specialty items you put on what someone might call a "sniper rifle".
If you are serious about accuracy get a reloading set and make customized loads for all your rifles. If you get a 30 caliber rifle try the Hornady 150 grain boat tail soft points (cat. # 3033) for most of your shooting and then after you get good with that bullet try a few others like maybe the Sierra 168 boat tail match bullet. But always remember that it is the shooter that must do his job. Most modern bolt action rifles are better than the person shooting them, and in the right hands they all can honestly be called sniper rifles.

The obnoxious answer is the correct one.........a "sniper" is a person's duty description, not the tool he uses.

That said, for over a century most armies simply used their standard issue battle rifle, specially selected for accuracy and mounted with a telescopic sight and maybe a turned down bolt handle to clear the sight. You can find many 20th Century varities that still shoot quite well. The Russian Mosin Nagant for example, made famous by the movie "Enemy at the Gates", can be had for $400.

Actually, any hunting rifle shooting a .30 caliber or larger round and fited with a good scope can do just about anything you will need. A lot of the "tactical" stuff is of questionable merit....it the rifleman making the shot not the rifle.

If you want the best long range tactical rifle in the world, don't even conside some piece of crap .50 BMG like the Barrett. The best in the world is the Chey Tac.

You should clarify your question and redefine it. Do you want an original military type sniper rifle (historical) or a new plastic age type sniper rifle? Any rifle can be used for sniping; just that some are equipped or set up different. Standard calibers are 8mm, 308, 30-06, some russian calibers; big babies are the 40 and 50 cal reach out to the horizon models.

That term needs to be changed. To a Sniper's Rifle. A rifle is a rifle until you put it into a Snipers hands. I'd recommend a Remington 700 in .270 or .308. Either will let you take most big game animals at long distance with practice and training.

Carlos Hathcock's (one of the greatest snipers that ever lived) rifle was a Winchester pre 1964 30-06 and was a standard target rifle with a 8x unertl scope. Its not the gun that makes a sniper, as that is just his tool. Sniping is a craft, that only training and time can produce.

It seems that any one with a rifle and scope is called a sniper now.

well first off djk is way off any weapon that was used in a crime would be melted down. but to get back to the original question any gun store, wal mart, etc. i would recommend a .308 cal round ie 308 win, 300 win mag, 300 wsm. in a bolt action config with a synthetic stock floated barrel, pillar bedded action and a high power scope with adjustable objective lens with at least 4-12-40mm. for the rifle i would go with either a remington 700 or savage 10-16 series and for the scope leupold. the savage is already floated and bedded, the remington will have to be worked on. the key to long range shooting is practice and consistency, (used the same rounds everytime you shoot) same make, type, bullet weight.and minimum sight in 200 yards. and one last tip dont go and do anything stupid.!!!

First off thank you for using the liberal elites new term for "hunting rifle". If numb skulls like you keep blurting out these newly invented terms for guns that have been around forever such as "assault rifle", "sniper rifle", and the like it wont be too long before you wont be able to buy one anywhere.

What do you think a "sniper rifle" is??

If you want to spend three to four thousand dollars, you can get one of those "tactical rifles" with all the bells and whistles on it. The rifle will most likely be more accurate than you are.

Or, you and just buy yourself a decent hunting rifle and put a decent scope on it and be just about as accurate as any sniper rifle you want to use.

A custom built sniper rifle might be capable of sub-minute groups, but so are many off the shelf hunting rifles.

What makes a sniper is the training, not the gun.
