I am with you. I dont know what the heck the deal is with the "fence" obsession. I don't know what the answer is, but, a fence is silly. There are too many ways to bypass a fence. There are tunnels dug underneath, hang gliding over the fence, smuggling in semi trucks, or under cars, or by boat or personal plane. That is just what I came up with in the last 20 seconds sitting here. The solution has to be a social solution, otherwise, where there is a will, there is a way.

A wall won't work because
1. It's way to expensive to build a very strong wall. That's why we have those cheapo ones on the border. The Chinese built a thick huge wall with cheap labor, something that can't be done today because of the expenses..unless Americans are willing to pay billions in wall building.
2. People will find a way around it. The Mongols did it what makes you think the illegals and drug runners won't?
What we need is more border patrol guards and technology. That will work better than a wall, IMO.
Besides 80% of illegals come in by vehicle...meaning a majority do not have to scale a wall, go around it, etc.

A wall will not work for a number of reasons, most importantly, the American people would not support the tactics needed to make such an enterprise work. How long do you think the American people would be up in an outrage over a child getting shot trying to cross the border.
All a wall will do is slow the speed which those crossing the border enter the nation.

Walls are simple solutions that people understand. They make one feel that one is doing something without having to sacrifice anything. Although you can build a wall that will stop people, it can't stop the more than 50% of "Illegals" who enter on visas.
The real question is whether Americans are willing to carry a National Identity card, and be subjected to arrest if they are not carrying it, or if they are willing to tolerate some "leakage".
Locally, walls can help. In San Diego, illegal entries have been pushed Eastward by a wall.

government is looking for a scapegoat, 2003 you wouldve even thought twice about immigration and now bush says something and people start making up **** on why to hate latinos, and i hate the minutemen who have no justification when they kill somebody who trys to cross the border for a better life, and the most people that come are actually looking for work, and there is not that many that are here to commit crimes like the media portrays, people want a wall just so they can feel good about themselves when there is actually more important things to worry about than people doing jobs that "average americans" wont do for below average wages

people who live along the border do not want a fence. That proposed fence would cut straight through a reservation, take property from legitimate property owners and block animals from getting to a water source as well as cut of irrigation routes. People in Texas do not want the fence if they live on the border, people living on the reservation in Arizona do not want a fence, in fact it would divide their reservation in two cutting them off from their families and friends.
There are many ranchers that do not want to sell their property to the government, nor should they have to, they live on that border, and the government wants to cut off their property from water. Would you sell if you would then not get water? I sure would not
In fact a University will also be divided right in two and if you build that fence you give your rights to the land on the south side of the wall as well as all the water to Mexico by default.

Hi Spazz: sure it does not make sense to build a fence , my personal opinion is why don't we invest more in countries south of the border to stop , the flow coming this way , let me explain , is just what is happening with drug addicts , we have a treatment program but the main problem still survives, see no matter how many addicts want to be treated , if we don't stop the smugglers , drugs will continue to cross our border , well it is the same thing with illegals they come to USA cause they don't have a way to survive back home , no jobs , no food , no money , so one solution to me will be to invest on companies south of the border, to create jobs and people will stop coming to the USA , it can be done , just my opinion .

People who harp on and on about this "wall" have no spacial perception. They truly think a 700 mile wall is going to stop people from hopping over a border that is 2100 miles long.
They are idiots.

People require paychecks. A wall is a one-time ( albeit expensive ) expense. You'd have to build roads and infrastructure to support all those guards. Well, maybe the same with a wall. A headache either way.
Personally I think we should build a power line, but close to the ground, if they get within a certain distant, it'll arc to them and fry'em. High enough they COULD walk under, but low enough it'd be deadly to try. And it would serve another useful service by distributing power.

I live in Arizona where the mean temp during an average summer day rises to over 105 degrees. There are no trees in the desert. It's a hostile environment. Most of the illegals are not the cream of Mexican society. Understand that.
An unmanned wall would be the optimum solution, preferably one with an iminent danger of electrocution attached.
Fry a few, save a million or two.
Definitely doable.
