I've gotten wonderful help from other people on yahoo who have had similar experiences.with having to have their birds leg aputated. Now I'm wondering though how to prepare its cage for when it comes home. We are going to give it our lovebirds cage because its old cage is much too tall. What should I put on the bottom of the cage and what about food and water dishes? Any help?

Well, put the food and water dishes on the bottom. You can get covered ones so that it doesn't poop in the dish. Put lots of perches close to each other and kind of like a set of stairs. Ladders are also great. The toys should be things near the bottom of the cage and ropes work well for them getting around, too! I don't know if you can see it well, but the cage on the left in the picture on http://www.cockatootrainer.com/newowner/ is set up for a bird with one leg. Vision cages are GREAT for these birds because they already come with the food on the bottom and they're easily cleaned and have the bars going horizontally so that the bird can climb really well. Good luck!

We had a cockatiel with a leg that was entirely unusable (twisted around backwards).

What we did was created a long ramp. We took a piece of wood and wrapped an easy-to-grip piece of cloth to it so it would be softer and easy for the bird to grip with it's good foot (and beak, if neccessary) to get up to the perch. We could then keep the food and water slightly up (not too high) so it would stay cleaner. Just make sure the food and water is within reach of the perch so the bird doesn't have to step or climb the walls of cage to get to them.

Put a lot of perches and ladders for her to climb on, as well as a resting platform. Keep the bars of the cage very clean as she'll use her mouth a lot for climbing. They can do amazingly well and are very adaptable!

Why is this common? Personally, I noticed that whenever you put 2 birds in the same cage, (not always but frequently) one makes the others life a living hell.
