I recently purchased a HDTV with 1080p and a blu-ray DVD player (PS3), and wonder what are home theater systems that would provide better outcomes at a reasonable cost (<$500). Do I need to buy a system or a receiver and separate speakers with capacity of 7.1 channel and HDMI 1.3 output?. Any recommendations on particular brand name and model?

Thanks ahead of time for your help!

The above answer will give you amazing sound, but that solution takes a lot of time and money. If you want a "quick fix" that yields entirely decent results, consider the Onkyo lineup of HT systems. It won't match up to the piece-by-piece assembly outlined by Robert P, but it will be a once-and-done expenditure that delivers admirable results. As long as you get a receiver with analog 5.1 or 7.1 inputs, HDMI 1.3 will not be as important. Especially if you do not buy a high-end system like the one described above, you would not really reap the benefits of having a 1.3 receiver.

Hi. T J. You already have a good Source (the DVD Player) and one of the best displays (1080P) so you really should get the best Receiver you can afford first. You don't have to buy all of the speakers together .Just start of with the front two you would normally use for stereo and add the others when you can increase your budget.Even two cheap ones will do for the moment.A better Receiver will give you a better sound to send to the speakers. If you were to buy the speakers first and then just a cheap Receiver you wont get a good sound. The speakers can only reproduce what is given to them. Here is the order of importance of equipment.
1. Source
2.Pre-Amp
3.Power Amp
4.Speakers.

No one else on Answers agrees with this chain of equipment in this order to get the best sound,BUT IT IS CORRECT.trust me i have been listening to hi fi gear for the past 45 years and other audiophiles agree to what i have said. You must put something good into the system to get something good out of your speakers.

Here are some Receivers under $500 that are worth considering.

ONKYO TXSR 703 (first choice)
MARANTZ SR5 600
DENON AVR - 1707
HARMON AVR - 340

in the adventure that your 'regular' HT gadget is an all-in-one, then you definitely can not. Throw it out, and purchase some in simple terms perfect abode theater equipment, equivalent to a sturdy 5.a million audio video receiver, like a Pioneer 522K or a Yamaha 371, around $200, and a Polk 6750 5.a million speaker set (approximately $225), and the BluRay participant which you desire to have. be certain to have adequate connecting cables, HDMI, speaker twine; sixteen gauge, and the optical audio cable.
