It should be P-N-R-D-3-2-1...... But in some cases it varies. You would use 1 in winter IF you were stuck in snow, as to help your vehicle slowly free itself. These are just gear choices made available for you for various circumstances- in which there are simply too many to list here,lol. Read your owners manual, as well as the other answers you will recieve here. However, if yours is a ford, lincoln, or mercury product- BE CAREFUL as their transmissions quite often fail prematurely in both their new and used vehicles.

They are lower gear ratios.1could be used in ice and snow for example for short peroids of time and2can be used for long steep hills and3 is for normal driving unless you also have over drive which is for highway driving wich is a higher gear which in turn drops the RPMS down to save fuel.

Those indicate the highest gear you can reach at that setting. So if you have it on "2", you will only have first and second gears available.
