What would you say is the most respectable thing you've heard a believer say on behalf of the existence of a God? (Even if it didn't make a believer out of you. I just mean the sort of thing that made you think that you still don't believe, but you can respect that argument.)

lol--good question, Nick L. I guess any "God" would do. The Christian God, the Greek gods, the Hindu gods...anything that you would consider a respectable argument.

I'm atheist, myself. Just wondering what everyone else has experienced.

The "god is love" thing... it would be nice if the christian god were loving instead of being the drowning god...

Honestly, I can't think of any religious argument I've heard that I thought had a better possibility of being true that it could be false, or even better than a 10% chance of being true. Maybe it's just the way I see things, but I just don't think it exists.

Mind you, I've met plenty of really good religious people with good morals who respect others and are just really good people. My boyfriend is one. But I have just never heard a good argument for the existence of God. And I'm pretty sure I've heard everything.

i don't respect arguments. they're either compelling, or they're not. i'm an atheist because i've yet to hear a compelling argument or observe compelling evidence that god exists. not "oh god might exist if you squint at this problem while hopping backwards". the most respectable thing a believer could say to me is that they believe despite the lack of demonstrable, empirical evidence supporting their belief. but that isn't an argument, it's a statement of preference i think.

Well, I suppose if I heard something that was intelligent, or even a little bit reasonable from anyone about the existence of god, I would at least be an agnostic. So, I am going with nothing.

There is no one line... but I have more respect for all the people of any and all religions that have decided it's all the same god, just by another [many] name. IMO that is a good step to world peace.

What god are you talking about? I could name my cat god and say I believe in him, that would make me think before dismissing it as a petty semantical twist.

Unfortunately there isn't one, I mean can you think of a good argument for, say, the existance of unicorns or fairies?
