They were placed in the Ark of the Covenant. The Ark was eventually taken off the earth.
Revelation 11:19
And the temple of God was opened in heaven, and there was seen in his temple the Ark of his Testament: and there were lightnings, and voices, and thunderings, and an earth-quake, and great hail.

There was nothing in the Ark save the two tablets of stone, which Moses put there in Horab.

There were two. One was broken by Moses due to his reaction to the way the Israelites were behaving when he got back from Sanai. The next Ten Commandments were placed in the Ark of the Covenant to signify that they could only remain unbroken in Christ. I know that seems like a jump into the New Testament, but that is what the Ark of the Covenant was about. It pointed to Jesus.

According to scripture, the first set of tablets was destroyed by Moses in his wrath against the faithless Hebrews. The second set was placed in the ark of the tabernacles and carried by Levites from place to place when Israel moved about at the Lord's command.

The Babylonians destroyed Jerusalem and plundered the Ark of the Covenant which contains the tablets, and no one knows what happened to them after that.

They were put in the ark (the one that Moses made) along with the staff of Aaron that budded.
The ark was lost during the roman times and never recovered.

I believe that they were in the Ark of the Covenant.
That has been either long hidden or lost.
My guess is that it is hidden and will be brought back when the new Temple is built.
Just a guess.
