no one can buy a machine gun from a store. It is possible to own a machine gun, but it requries a federal license and must be approved by the local police department. People who do own them do not use them to hunt. They are just for show and shooting at the range. Imagine the cost of bullets when firing a fully automatic weapon and the sport of punching holes in paper suddenly becomes too expensive for most people.

Well considering there is no such thing as a "m4 machine gun" then i guess the clerk would ask him something more along the lines od "Do you even know what you're talking about?"
The M4 is a carbine version of the M16 series assualt rifle.
Just because it is available in full auto doesnt make it a machine gun.
Really if I had a Class 3 permit and the money and the clerk asked me "what do I want it for?" I'd tell him to piss off and take my business elsewhere. Its my damn right to own a firearm under the Constitution and anyone who questions that is the enemy to me, a domestic terrorist.

Actually, any Class 3 dealer or clerk wouldn't do either, he would just tell him , "Go Away!"
Anyone who REALLY knows ANYTHING about Class 3 weapons know that, even tho full-autos are legal for purchase and possession by qualified, law abiding Americans, NO ONE can buy ANY full-auto weapon manufactured after 1986, the year the busy-body Demicrat Congress and the BATFE Boys limited the Class 3 market to what weapons were registered AT THAT DATE. THis law includes weapons and ALL components, INCLUDING conversion selector parts.
IF you can afford to buy an M-16, and IF you can find one, you could dress it up with aftermarket plastic parts, but you CAN'T buy a M-4! PERIOD!
No weapon made after that date can be bought, whether domestic manufacture OR import. THIS INCLUDES the M-4 clone of the M-16 series rifle.

Same as going to the car dealer and asking for a Corvette...
"What do you want that for?" and then the government telling you that the only corvettes available are those made by 1986. and then subjecting you to forms, forms and yet more forms, tax fee's, 2 in depth background checks. Then maybe in 6 to 18 months you get the license you have been wanting, now if only you could find that car of your dreams...
OH, and even IF you could get a M4 you would not be able to use this as a hunting firearm BECAUSE NO STATE IN THE US AUTHORIZES FULL_AUTO'S FOR HUNTING!!!!!!!!

Yes in some states they are legal. But inorder for it to be legal you have to have a Class III weapons permit you only need this if the weapon you are buying is a machinegun or shoots 3 round bursts. You can buy a AR-15 that looks just like a M-4 that only shoots in semi auto. You do not need no special permits for these where I live. Pa. I own a bunch of guns and never did a clerk at a shop ask me what I was using it for.And if he did Id tell him its none of his buisness. But if I was buying a Class III M-4 Id be buying it for homedefense. If the police and feds have them why shouldnt I.

Whats your point?
You speak as if owning certain rifles for something like target shooting is illegitimate? Only hunting is legitmate? Only "home" defense is legitimate in your book?
There is a Second Amendment you know, and it leaves nothing to question. Its a RIGHT to keep and bear ARMS. No reason stated, every reason implied.
I don't think you know what the hell you're talking about. A selective fire rifle requires a special tax and/or ATF Class III permits to purchase and own, and that is in MOST states.
The semi-auto only "look alike" is NOT a "machine gun", and is a simple semi-auto rifle. Nothing more. The way it looks mean nothing at all.

People probably say for the shooting range...which is really what some people buy them for. Others will say hunting. I have never heard of a hunter using a M4 before. Poor deer.

Who would want an M4 anyway. Get your license and buy an AK-47 or AK-74 for a functioning piece of history that will gain in value over time.
