First congrats on the little one...and think like this pregnancy is the one time in life that we have clearance to feel okay and confident to carry that extra weight. Do not try to lose any weight just watch what you eat. Make sure it is small healthy meals with lots of veggies (preferably fresh or steamed), some fruit and lean protein. Take your vitamins drink lots of water and make sure you get some exercise. Exercising throughout the pregnancy will keep you and the baby healthy and should help make labor a bit easier! If nothing else just walking or swimming would be good, if you were on a work out regime before pregnancy you can usually continue the same level throughout but do not start a strenuous new work out if you were not active before. Just listen to your health-care professional as to how much weight to add and come back on line after the baby to get a tough workout regiment to get your body back. I've seen women get a lot nicer bodies after baby....chasing him or her will help and if you breastfeed that burns extra calories too...so relax take care of you and enjoy this time of life. After baby you can email me for specific tips on exercises (after the baby is 6 weeks old) Congrats again!!! my email is brightenlives@yahoo.com

You can not safely put yourself on a diet when you are pregnant. Pregnancy is 100% absolutely positively completely and utterly the WRONG time to loose weight. Talk to your doctor immediately if there is a medical reason for loosing weight he or she will guide you. Other than that, you risk yourself and the baby since your body works abnormally when pregnant. Starting exercise before 5 months can but you at higher risk for miscarriage. Talk to your doctor about safe exercises to keep you in shape and ease your labour and that is it.

Reducing your calories while pregnant can also risk miscarriage as your body might think it can not support the baby in this time of famine. You CAN change to healthier eating habits and that is about it.

Dieting is not recommended but you should speak to your doctor about how many calories you should be getting a day, and what a healthy diet for you consist of. Will you require more calories in the last trimester and how much weight gain is normal during pregnancy. You may want to consider breast feeding, not only is it healthier for the baby, but it will help you shed pounds while maintaining a healthy diet. (breast feeding does require more caloric intake) Learn to eat well now and continue after your baby is born and you will be helping both of you. Remember to keep all your prenatal doctor visits. Congratulations and best wishes for a healthy pregnancy and baby.

I usually recommend people to take about 300-500cal off their daily calories requirement (maintenance amount). Baby in the first trimester needs about 300cal/day, in the second - 400cal/day and in the last 500cal/day.
find daily calorie intake calculator on the net, enter all your stats and it will tell you how many calories you need a day to maintain your weight and since your baby will create deficit dont go below that number.
eat 5-6 small meals a day (eat every 2-3 hours - it optimizes your metabolism)
5-8 servings of fruit and veggies a day
8 glasses of water
have complex carbs for breakfast - they give you energy
have protein (lean meat, legumes etc) for dinner - repairs muscle
When you are pregnant it doesnt mean you cant exercise (unless your doctor tells you so)
cardio is the only fat burning exercise and burns fat all over your body (running, jogging, swimming, spinning, elliptical etc) 4-6 times a week for 30-50min (ideally 45min because the first 20-30min body burns carbs and only then starts burning fat), light weight training (more muscle=faster metabolism)
dont consume foods that are made of white flour (white bread, cakes, pasta etc.), sugar loaded foods (cookies, icecream, candy etc) and nothing fried, oily.
ofcourse you can spoil yourself once in a while with a little treat:)

Eat healthily to give your baby the most nutrients.

Eat more veggies, lean meat and complex carbs. Eat 5 to 6 meals a day.

I am on low carb, low fat, high fibre, high protein and brisk walking an hour 5 times a week. And I have lost 31lbs and now maintaining my 108lbs for more than a year.

forget dieting while you are pregnant. it's not healthy for you or for the baby. just concentrate on eating healthy, and exercising.
