I am very confused about how to fill out my W4.

I am 23 but I think my parents still claim me as a dependent because I don't make much money.

I started a job as a waitress, so I don't know how much money I am going to make there (since my income will mostly depend on tips).

Should I file for withholding?

If so, which lines do I need to fill out?

you parents can only claim you as a dependent if you are under 18 or you are a full-time student. if neither are true, you should be claiming yourself.

as for your W4, if you can afford to get more money withheld for taxes throughout the year, you should file single and claim zero. this will ensure that you do not OWE money to the federal government when tax filing comes next year, however, you will receive a return from them.

Making $3400 or less only has to do with full-time students. Full-time students that make less than $3400 a year, do not have to pay income tax. Anything more than that is taxed.

If you make $3400 or more for the year, then your parents can't claim you as a dependent.

Fill in your information on lines 1,2,3 and 4. On line 5, put "1". Sign and date the form.

You file single and zero...even if your parents (especially if your parents) claim you as a dependant. At the bottom of the form where it says total withholdins you put S-0.
