And for those that say "no", how would you feel if you elected a president, considered him a good president, and later discovered that he/she was an atheist?

I ask this question because apparently, atheists are the most distrusted group in America. :(

Yes – And, Americans have elected Presidents who were, if not Atheists, certainly non-religious.

Episcopalian minister Bird Wilson (son of Founding Father James Wilson) in an 1831 sermon noted:

• “the founders of our nation were nearly all Infidels, and that of the presidents who had thus far been elected [George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, James Monroe, John Quincy Adams, and Andrew Jackson] _not a one had professed a belief in Christianity”

• “among all our presidents from Washington downward, not one was a professor of religion, at least not of more than Unitarianism.”

------------

Abraham Lincoln

• "The Bible is not my book nor Christianity my profession. I could never give assent to the long, complicated statements of Christian dogma."

Absolutely. If someone is an atheist it shows they have a solid grounding in reality.

But you're right, atheists are the most distrusted group in America, so evidently I am a minority.

Absolutely I would vote for an Atheist because they are far less dangerous than a christian in power. As we have so obviously seen for the past 7 years. I think the ideal president would be an Atheist because then he/she has nothing to cloud his/her judgement.

yes, I saw this survey awhile ago
people were found to be more open to a homosexual president than an atheist one

I wouldn't vote for someone *because* they were atheist... I personally don't investigate a candidate's religious beliefs at all, simply because they'd all disagree with me in that sense, when all I want is to find out how to support a candidate who isn't so bad

Religious belief, or non-belief is the poorest way of judging a government official. If we feel that a person must have many superstitions in order to be a good president, we're in big trouble.

No. I hate Atheists better than I hate holy rollers. i'm an agnostic. no longer something ticks me off better than Atheists, slandering and disrespecting non secular human beings and attempting to incorporate me of their numbers. additionally, because of fact Atheists are various stages of cost plenty extra possibly to positioned on their non faith on their sleeve. it extremely is not sufficient that they choose to have self assurance in no longer something, yet they could take their non theory to a sparkling point by making use of attacking, slandering and insulting people who do have self assurance at each danger. additionally, because of fact being an agnostic i found the could stumble on the two factors of the non secular situation and that i found that as human beings often, Atheists are commonly a team of severe losers, catering specially to a crowd produced from criminals, drug addicts, and welfare recipients blended with a sturdy dose of have faith fund babies from rich families who in no way worked an afternoon of their lives. All in all, i'm going to take a sturdy, center of the line Christian, Jew, Hindu or Buddhist any day.

I would rather vote for an honest atheist than a hypocritical, lying so called "person of faith" who is first and foremost a polititian who will tell you anything he thinks you want to hear to get elected.

Religion should be separate from State. Yes, I would elect an Atheist - especially because it would be better than the one we have now.

Yea. I remember hearing that some candidates (not specifically for president) pretend not to be athiest because it would lose them so many votes. Terrible isn't it!
