I understand that Macromedia Flash Player is a plugin to play this on the internet, but I downloaded a movie file that I would like to keep watching, so I need to find a program that can play these types of files.

You should check out Real Player 11 Beta. It will download and play just about any video including Flash, as long as it is not copy protected. It works really well with IE7, but not so well with Fire Fox.

SWF is a Shockwave Flash format, playable with the flash plugin or the Shockwave downloadable file. All you really need to do though is drag the file over top of your browser and as long as you have the flash plugin installed it will play.

Media Player Classic can play them. Some other media players might, too. You can also open the file and watch it at any time with your web browser.

Go to the Adobe website and download a standalone Flash player.
