I looked at my watermelon today, and there was foam at the top. I thought it had to be dish soap, so I washed it off, and all that was there was a small crack. Throughout the day, it continued to foam. Needless to say, I chucked it, but I'm perturbed that watermelon can foam. Does anyone know the reason behind this?

Your watermelon is fermenting, the same way they make wine. You won't get sick eating it but it doesn't taste very good!
Next time refrigerate the darn thing or eat it sooner!

I have never seen a foaming watermelon. I am sure it was spoiled. Glad you tossed it.

She is right it is better to be cautious.

Was it cut open sitting out on a counter? Was it out for awhile then you put it away.

There then is a chance the sugars in it were being fermented. So what you have there is watermellon wine.

It means that it was going bad. I work in produce and have seen many a rotten watermelon in my day.

You did right by tossing it out. Sounds to me that it had gone bad. Sour in other words.
