A wedding guest should never wear red since this is a strong color which might take attention from the bride.
You can read this in any wedding etiquette book.

Sure. It does depend on the time of day though. If it's a daytime wedding, you'd be more apt to wear a shorter dress in a more muted color. If it's evening, a long red dress would be perfect.

First of all, you are not related to either the bride or groom. As soon as you get to the sibling of the spouse of a relative, that person is not related. That, notwithstanding, you may wear anything that you want as long as the outfit is in good taste on its own. Enjoy.

Silk indicates sensuality and red is natures color to attract sexually. So I would have to say NO. At a wedding you should never do anything to take away from the bride,

A red dress is NOT okay. It will make you stand out and it is not your day.

i dont think it would be very good to wear that. The usual outfit for a wedding is in pastel colors... like pink, light blue, yellow, you know.. springy colors... lol thats just my advice!

It is the bride's day to shine so if the dress is better than her bridal gown I'd say no. My mom told me that is why bride's maid gowns are generally plain.

Yes, as long as it will match the formality of the other guests' outfits. If it were me, I'd wouldn't dress too sexy either, since you don't know them too well.
