The non-smoker is doing nothing that will affect the body or environment of the smoker.
The smoker IS doing something that will affect the body and the environment of the non-smoker.
Therefore, it is the responsibility of the smoker to be considerate of the non-smoker and not smoke around him if requested.
The non-smoker doesn't smoke. The smoker has no right to inflict smoke into the non-smoker's lungs.
That is very personal, and I consider it an assault, as smoking is well known for causing breathing problems and death.
As far as cleaning up after themselves, someone who is that inconsiderate not to clean up their ash shouldn't be allowed into the car in the first place, shouldn't even be allowed into the car if they are going to smoke in the first place.

I would tell her to clean it up if she wants to continue smoking in the car. As a smoker I always make sure I ask the other person before I light up. How long is the ride anyway?? Tell her you'll pull over somewhere so she can get out and smoke if the ride is that long.

Is this her car or yours? Your talking about your wife just ask her not to smoke in the car. If it were a co-worker or something I would say who owns the car rules the car. But you can explain that it bothers you and if the ride is short enough could the refrain from smoking and if the ride is long or a trip could you stop and stretch your legs while they smoke out of the car. otherwise drive yourself

It doesn't matter whose car it is, you're married and there really aren't "hers" and "mine" in marriage. The effects from poisonous gases produced by burning tobacco are intensified when you're in a car, even if the smoker opens the window. Not only would I not permit anyone to smoke while I am in the car, I wouldn't ride with them if they did. You don't mention whether you have any children. If so, I wouldn't permit them to ride in the car with her until she agrees not to smoke in the car.
Even the most dedicated smokers can hold out until they reach their destination. By all means, let them poison themselves, but they have no right to do it to you too.

My hubby and I (1 smoker,1 non) have a no-smoking rule in our new cars. The old one can be smoked in if the window is down. It's mostly my rule and I'm the smoker. I also banned smoking in our house.

She should quit...first of all.
But if it's her car, sorry, too bad for you. Find another ride to work.
however, it's really very rude of her to smoke in the car when she has passengers that don't.
You should be talking to HER about this. Perhaps you can come to an agreement about it.
Go online and pull up all the research about how dangerous second hand smoke is. Tell her if she wants to kill herself slowly that way, that's find but it's not fair for her to do it to you as well.
If you can't agree, get your own car and drive yourself.

Now you already know this answer, you are just mad. Of course it is wrong, disrespectful, rude, impolite and a total lack of respect! You must have said something, right? If not, why not, and if you did, why is she still lighting up? She won't clean up after herself, how dirty and nasty is that! Do you have a partnership going here or is she that rude and ugly in spirit? You need to say, hey sweets, no more smoking, or if you do, hang your head out the window! Do you know second hand smoke is toxic? People develop all sorts of terminal diseases from second hand smoke, hello?

You are married. Its not YOUR car or HER car, it belongs to both of you. You both work, so i assume you both contribute to the paying of the household bills, including the car payment.
You married a smoker,or chose to continue in amarriage with asmoker rather then divorce her.I assume you ride together for economic reasons.
your options are this: buy her her own car, take the bus or crack a window.
Onthe way home from work tomorrow, stop at a car wash or gas station with a vaccum and tell her its time to clean up her mess. Point out that as much money as this car is costing US, that WE really need to take care of it.

Ordinarily, I would say if the driver of the car objects, then no, but since she's your wife, and, presumably, both of you are contributing to the car payments you ought to try to strike some happy medium. Could she smoke with the windows down? Can you strike a compromise somehow? Compromise is what I would strive for in such a situation.
