the procedure is called laryngoscopy. it can be either indirect or direct. a direct laryngoscopy uses a laryngoscope (basically a large metal tongue blade with a light source at the tip) to visualize the larynx.

If done with a rigid scope, it is called laryngoscopy. When done with a flexible scope threaded through the nose, it is called nasopharyngolaryngoscopy.
