Have you ever jumped in a pool wearing clothes? Did you notice how they seemed to pull you down? With all that wet fur, cats feel heavier, and they just don't like it. It makes it hard to swim and walk. Also, the noise of many faucets hurts their sensitive ears.

Well, not all cats are afraid of water but when they are, it is a natural instinct in them. My cats love water and even have their own swimming pool... of course it is a plastic kitty pool that is about 5 feet in diameter and I keep about 10 inches of water in it. I have a few gold fish in it and they chace them around the pool but never harm them. They sit and swim in it all the time. They also love to take baths and showers so we have to keep the bathroom door shut tight to keep them out. If a cat is afraid of anything, it us usually from instinct because their parents were afraid of it or something caused it to be afraid of it. For example, if a cat is chased with a broom, then whenever you get the broom out, it will run. The same is true with all animals and humans too.

well cats are afraid of water because maybe some or most people throw them in the tub or water and most of the times cats don't like that.

Cat's aren't really afraid of water. They're just not use to it. If you bath a cat when they're young, them when he grow he won't be afraid of it and may actually like to take a bath.

Not all. Tigers like water.
Domestic cats - They are afraid of the non-routine (like being wet). They avoid things that are not within the normal activities of the day.

I heard from a long time cat owner that if you bathe the kittens early on in life they get used to being given a bath. My kittens don't enjoy but tolerate it reasonably well.

ACTUALLY the reason why domisticated cats hate water is because our cats arnt really direct decendents from tigers and other big cats.
they actually are evolved from a desert weasel.
so naturally, they wouldnt like water very much.

it is so much of being afraid it is there fur. the chemical makeup of it wont allow it to dry fast and they can lick it and it wont help. so cats don't like getting there fur wet so they don't like water.
