People who torment animals eventually move on to humans, usually children. It doesn't take much to see that hurting something small and helpless is sick, and if they can't see the pain of an animal that they lit on fire and watched as it writhed and screamed in agony...what will stop them from drowning the toddler they are babysitting when it cries too much? Or push their little brother or sister down the stairs out of jealousy? Or grow up to be a child molester or murderer? The cries of something small and helpless mean nothing in the face of their twisted amusement so what can stop them other than being punished as harshly as possible as soon as the signs are found?
Something in these sick people is broken, and there may be no fixing it, but at least they can understand consequences...even if they can't feel.

There is one passage in the Bible that is totally ignored. We are responsible for this planet. The passage says, "Be fruitful and multiply and replenish the earth." The key word is "replenish" which means "Put back". We are all fellow travelers here on planet Earth. Anyone who does not respect our fellow travelers has a major problem. When things like this happen we have to wonder what drives humans into such a state of cruelty that leads them to disregard life to that extent. It would be interesting if our Justice system was like the Islamic nations who would probably do what you suggest. Then again, look at what that point of view is doing in the middle east. Nothing good can come from that unless there is some understanding of why those acts are being committed in the first place. This is very sad. One must have to wonder why they do this in the first place? Video games? Everyday culture and mind-sets? Stupid parents? We had a similar case here in northern Wisconsin a couple of years ago. Some sickkos actually responded to an ad for free kittens to give away. These idiots got one and the mother, soaked both with gasoline and set fire to them! The kitten survived, but the mother didn't. There has got to be a special place in hell for people who get their kicks out of torturing defenseless animals.

I do agree with you-and then some!!! Unfortunately, laws prevent doing to those two girls what they did to that kitten, or burned at the stake, or tossed into an arena with a pride of hungry lions which would be suitable punishment in days of old.
As far as I am concerned-there is NO excuse for this and NO ample punishment available. These girls will not grow up to be respectable citizens nor our future leaders.
The "death sentence" they chose for the kitten should speak volumes. Since the kitten is still struggling to stay alive(at time of writing this), then a charge of attempted murder with life in prison without the possibility of parole would suit me.
This prison time should be served in a prison where the other cell-mates have their own way of dealing with "child rape", "child torturers" and "baby killers" because that's the class they are in. Even in prison-some crimes are NOT acceptable!!!
If prison space isn't available-then spending the rest of their lives on an island with no other living animals or humans is my second choice ONLY after raising the money it would have taken to save this kitten.
Just an animal? Humans are the ONLY animal that does things like this and worse get some sort of pleasure from it. They are an "unclassified-sub-species" that desearves to be isolated-permanently!!!

I was infuriated when I heard that news item. Both girls were teenagers (I think something like 14 & 15) so they were old enough to know what happens, to know what pain is, to know you don't set living things on fire. The kitten was a stray collected in a cage and waiting for the animal shelter to come and take him (and several other strays also in cages) away. The kitten was caged, couldn't get away, and the girls set it on fire, in the cage.
I honestly do not know what should be done with people like that. Just sticking them in jail for a few years will mean nothing to them; upon release they will be even worse then when they went in; they'll blame their misfortune on that poor little kitty (who, last I heard, was surviving but it was burned over a large portion of its body so it'll be touchy for a long while). Sticking them in jail does nothing to rearrange their minds. And there is something seriously wrong with those girls' minds. At 15, I'm not sure there is anything psychologically that can be done to fix them. They have the potential of becoming people killers, maybe even serial killers, since they have it in their heads that seeing living creatures in pain is fun. Personally, if it were up to me alone, I would "euthanize" them--kindly and quickly with no pain, just because they have proved they can't be trusted to live in society congenially. If there is cancer, cut it out before it infects and spreads. Before these girls produce babies that they might abuse and/or murder. But we are a lenient society so that won't happen--heck, it was just a stupid cat and we all know humans are far, far, far more important than any ol' lowly animal (for those who didn't recognize it for what it is, that last sentence is bitter sarcasm because the law does always put human life over everything else even when it isn't merited, even when it would be better to get rid of the human to save the rest of the world).

These girls need psychitric evaluations and not a minute too soon! Something in their psyche has caused them to think harming and killing an animal is ok. It is never ok! Punishment is not the answer. They need help and a lot of love to turn them around and fast! BTW, I just went to the link and saw the poor little thing, I had no idea Adam was still alive! He is truly traumatized. Their parents should be made to pick up the bill! Absolutely. Until parents start taking responsibility for kids who do things, this type of thing will continue to happen. Adam, I'm praying for ya honey! Tina's taking real good care of you. Stay well.

I, too, have not heard about this. You said 3 years old?!! Where WERE their parents?! What kind of parents are they? Apparently not very good ones! However, I think the children should be taken completely out of the home and placed in separate environments with serious counseling and monitoring with a lot of positive reinforcements to whatever type of negative ones that they were seeing in their homes. I positively think that the parents should me looked at and held accountable.
UPDATE!!!!
Sorry! I thought I read that they were 3 years old! That not only scared be to death to think that their were children doing these things (I know there are), but it upset me because I have a 2 and 3 year old grandson and the thought that one of their playmates might potentially do this..well, anyway. I, still maintain that should be placed in separate environments with no contact of any kind with the other one and should undergo serious counseling and constant monitoring with a lot of positive reinforcements to whatever type of negative ones that they were seeing in their homes. Based on their age and with some understanding of the penal system, I am not sure that a typical jail would teach them anything but how to not get caught at what they do the next time. a I still think that the parents should be looked at and held accountable.

I am not familiar with that story in the news. Do you have a website or news site that tells about it? Most states are now prosecuting animal cruelty. It is still a pretty new thing so if you feel that more laws or stricter laws should apply to these incidents, then I would contact your local authorities and congressmen and senators as well as the Humane Society of the United States. You can actually become a free member of HSUS and they will send you letters to write to your representatives as well as keep you current about all animal cruelty like dog fights and mass slaughter of baby seals, etc. All animal cruelty is horrible. I am firmly against it and I am a member. http://www.hsus.org/ I have helped stop a lot of animal cruelty just by writing letters to representatives and even to other countries like Canada and England in order to stop animal cruelty. It is so sad that anyone has to harm another life of any kind and every animal lover out there needs to fight against it by encouraging all their representatives to get involved against it. I hope you do.

15 year old girls definitely know better- thats a freshman or sophomore in highschool. They have been arrested-not prosecuted or sentenced yet. It would be max 3 years in a JUEVENILE facility.
My sentence:
3 years for arson in juevenile facility + 7 years in an adult facility with daily psychiatric treatment. NO time off for good behavior, no early probation/parole, and when sentence is finished parole for 10 years.
These two are serial killers in the making. No doubt if the sentence is probation then we will be hearing about a female Dahmer in the very near future.

Anyone who hurts an animal on purpose should be locked up for a lot longer than our liberal society thinks is fair. The police shouldalso look at their parents because many times they only do what their parents have done or do.Also a large fine that hurts the parents in the pocketbook my help them teach the kids to treat animals and people with respect.
