I read that cats do not meow to each, except while they are kittens. They use this, meows, as communication with their mothers. As substitute parents they transpose. I have since watched our cats and it seems to be true. As a footnote, the female does it more than the male. This may be due to the fact she was taken from her mother too early.

I have one cat that does this and one that doesn't. My first cat is 12 years old and she has done the meow/meow back thing since she was a baby. She also will mewo back if you talk to her. I have complete conversations with her and believe she understands at least half of what I am saying. My other cat is 3 years old. Has never done this, does not respond back to hardly anything unless it is her idea in the first place. She hears, and does make noise, but she is not very interactive. I do not think your family is weird. If they are, I am right with them. Both of my cats are cute.

I talk to my cats too. They talk to me. Siamese cats are famous for this. If you listen carefully you can decipher between the pitch of the meows. Sometime they want outside or hungry or attention. Cats don't meow at other cats. Cats only meow to communicate to people.

its just communicating, my cat does this too. And one of my other cats watches tv.. im sure they understand everything we say. I can talk to my cat without meowing and she will meow back. (though i have no idea what shes saying lol). Cats understand humans alot more then we think.

Sure it's normal. They're just chattin'.
Some of our cats will meow if I say their name. We can spend several minutes @ a time going back & forth like that, it's fun & visitors often get a laugh out of it, too.

yeah, i guess its normal for cats. like mine, when it meows i'll meow back to it and it constantly meowing at me.. i think it wants to attract our attention, and when we reply, it feels like it has managed to capture our attention.. that's all.. i think its a part of communication with human in order to ask its master for food, too.. hehe..

If you are a cat or a cat person, this is very normal. I converse with my cat every day. It is called a relationship.

oh sure it is. I've had cats for years, and I talk to them all the time....and they "talk" back to me as well. Siamese are especially talkative...I've had 4 and have 1 right now. cats like attention...and like to talk to you about it, too!
