It's festive and just for fun. Indian women wear mehandi, made out of henna, on their hands in the form of a liquid paste. When the paste dries, it is scraped off and the symbols remain on the hands. It is just because it looks pretty and is kind of fun, and people get it done before their weddings. That again, is so their hands and feet look pretty just like their faces for the marriage.

well today popularly henna tattoos are made with black ink thats comes of.
traditionally it is made with a leaf called henna - hence the name, it is actually a green leaf that dries and leaves a deep maroon. you may even love the smell.
i donno what it stands for populatly but in my tradition i.e. indian brides get a very intricate henna pattern put on their palms and the deeper the maroon the more she would be loved by her husband, just a belief.

Henna (Mehendhi) originated in India. Young girls who would get married used mehendhi and made designs on their hands and feet. Girls and women in India still use it for when they or someone in their family gets married.

I was always told that the reason the bride to be is decorated with the henna days before the wedding is to be sure she is not "doing things" before the wedding to ruin the art, therefore making her clean, rested, and ready for her husband.
