I have just adopted a 51/2 month old Black Great Dane Puppy. We have fallen so in love with her. I have some concerns though. She seems very timid and am not sure if she is just having separation anxiety. She often stays in a corner and watches us at all times. We have had her a week and she has made some improvements. But, we all have to make the effort and get on the floor with her and put her on our laps. She shakes at first and then calms down. Is this normal? Could this simply be separation anxiety from being with the breeder for 5 1/2 months? I am concerned but would never think of parting with her. What do I have to do to make her feel safe? Tinker Bell has our hearts!!

Also, I am trying to find a cage? I can only find the largest size of 48". She is already 60# and I don't think as an adult that would be large enough.

All inquiries are appreciated. There is nothing we won't do for our Tinker Bell.

If she has not been socialized by this time and has only been living in a kennel, you are going to have a rough time with her. It's not impossible, but it's going to be difficult. Most of the positive socialization puppies receive takes place between 8-12 weeks of age. After that it may be too late in some aspects. You will have to be very patient, expose her slowly to lots of gentle, quiet, positive experiences and people, lots of treats and praise. I have had a Great Dane and they are very faith full dogs. To have a timid one is rare but I would suspect that , she had a nasty experience before you had her. My advice would be to give her time, don't be to pushy ie don't try to put her on your lap as this will be impossible in a few months time because of her size. Danes love cheese so a small bit will be greatly appreciated. My big concern is why do you want a cage .Dogs of any breed should never be kept in a cage.If you are thinking alone these lines no wonder the dog is timid. All dogs must be treated as an equal and then you will have a friend for its life.

Patience, patience, patience, and more patience..... crate training will probably be very good for her, as long as you never use it for punishment. Put an old sheet over it, so she can go in and feel safe when she's getting anxious. We just got the 48" crate for our dane pup, he loves his big comfy pillow and goes in all the time to nap with the door wide open. It should be fine. Our breeder has the same size and it's plenty big. They only need to stand up and be able to turn around. Don't force her into your lap, it may scare her if she's not used to snuggling with a person. Let it be her own choice (though hiding a few hotdogs slices in your pocket may help her decide you're worth sitting on ;-)

Probably not seperation anxiety. Sounds more like she's just not used to being the center of attention. She'll come around when she's ready. Don't give up!
