The Bible is meant to be black and white, but, like many things in life, your question touches on a gray area. I think, for this one, you need to look at YOUR morals and realize what the Bible has TAUGHT you, instead of hanging on the one thing it says. What would Jesus do?

Lying is a bad thing to do but I think in some situations it might be the right thing to do depending on why your doing it.
If you are hiding someone who is about to be tortured by an evil person it is OK to say that you don't know where they are.
Or if your a child and you promise you won't tell your parents that you are being molested it is OK to do the right thing and tell them anyway.
If you have someone standing behind you with a gun pointed to your head and tells you that if you tell anyone that they are there they will kill you it's OK to lie and tell the other person standing outside and say that everything is OK.
If you promise to keep a secret for a friend if they ask you and the secret they ask you to keep presents a direct threat to their safety or the safety of someone else it is OK to break that promise and tell someone.

What I'm trying to say is sometimes a good deed cancels out a bad one.

But if you lie about something for personal gain or to hurt someone or just to be misleading that is NOT OK and will usually have a painful consequence attached to it.

If your lie causes pain and suffering it is a sin.
But if it prevents pain and suffering it is not necessarily a sin and in some cases is important to do in order to right a wrong.
Just use good judgment and you will be OK.

A man of untruth may go unexposed for the time being, but consider his future. Jehovah hates “a false witness that launches forth lies,” states the Bible. (Proverbs 6:16-19)
Such a man’s portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur—the second death—along with such wrongdoers as murderers, fornicators, and idolaters.—Revelation 21:8.

The faithful witness does not commit perjury when testifying. His testimony is not tainted with lies. However, this does not mean that he is under obligation to give full information to those who may want to bring harm to Jehovah’s people in some way. The patriarchs Abraham and Isaac withheld facts from some who did not worship Jehovah. (Genesis 12:10-19; 20:1-18; 26:1-10) Rahab of Jericho misdirected the king’s men. (Joshua 2:1-7) Jesus Christ himself refrained from divulging total information when doing so would have caused needless harm. (John 7:1-10) He said: “Do not give what is holy to dogs, neither throw your pearls before swine.” Why not? So that “they may never . . . turn around and rip you open.”—Matthew 7:6.

Bearing false witness is to say someone did something they didn't do. It's not to see a cookie in a cookie jar and then say there's not any, or even to eat it and say there were none left. However, if there were a cookie in a cookie jar and it wasn't supposed to be eaten, and you ate it and blamed someone else, that's bearing false witness. Or, if you didn't see who ate it and said you did, that, too, would be bearing false witness. To falsely testify as to what you, personally, observed, it what is being referred to, not lying in general. For that, we go to the NT, where we're told "Lie not to one another, seeing you have put off the old man [sin nature] with is deeds."

The commandment specifically says "Thall shalt not bear false witness AGAINST thy neighbor"

Seems to me, lying to protect someone from EVIL, is bearing a false witness FOR thy neighbor.

There are many examples of liars in Scripture, from Jacob’s deceit in Genesis 27 to the pretense of Ananias and Sapphira in Acts 5. Time after time, we see that falsehood leads to misery, loss, and judgment.

Sometimes a question arises concerning lies that seem to have positive results. For example, the lie the Hebrew midwives tell Pharaoh seems to result in the Lord’s blessing (Exodus 1:15-21). However, it should be obvious that the Lord is blessing the midwives’ rescue of the children, rather than any falsehood they told. God in His mercy blessed them in spite of the lie, rather than because of it.

Another example is Rahab’s lie in Joshua 2:5. God never condones her lie, but He does forgive it. Rahab’s life is spared in response to her faith, which she expresses in verses 9-11. God not only forgives Rahab’s lying, but also her idolatry and harlotry—another example of God’s mercy in action.

No,thy shall not lie, but I am am almost positive that the lord will forgive you if it's a peace making lie or a lie that is used to avoid hurting someone. It's definitely where the heart and it sounds like yours is in the right place. Don't sweat it.

Lying happens everyday. It is the severity of the lie and whether it is malintended that matters I think.

Some lies help people...like the Holocaust one you mentioned.

Some are little white lies that help people function as polite society. Do you like this dress? yes.

Words are important,,, sadly ,,, Witness 1.one who has seen or heard something. 2. something that serves as evidence; a sign. so if you know that they are going to be killing them . you don't want to be telling the jews , that no one will be killed if they give themselves up but you dont have to be good to the bad...

You have a choice... lie or be complicit to murder... it should be an easy choice.

"False witness" is a lie to avoid getting into trouble yourself, or to falsely put someone else in trouble.
