I have a 9 yr old that does chores also but when she is wanting something outside of the norm I pay her $1 a week for each individual chore she has a total of 8 she has to keep up w/ them the whole week and we do a chart sticker system no sticker than no $$ if they are not done for the entire week no $$ we find the price of what she is wanting and offer to pay half if she saves the other half

we also have an understanding that the chores are a normal thing she needs to pitch in even if she is not getting paid and so far(2 yrs) she's fine w/that

and it works out like this she is more willing to do the chores effectively and keep up with them and work toward saving for a goal so she keeps in habit of earning and saving, when we are "actively" working for something I throw in bonuses like extra dollar if she has done a exceptional job or pay by sundae where she can either get the cash or me take her out for an icecream I don't offer when she's not getting paid so it's incentive

I'm happy with it and proud & surprised how focused she is at earning and saving

her last "project" was a $80 CSI kit she worked at it for 5 wks
right know she is working on some game called DesignersWorld

Hi!! I'm a mother of a 7 year old daughter & she gets allowance, also. We decided to give her $3 a week about 8 months ago for helping around the house. She really enjoys making her own money & knowing that she can help out, too. However, my child is my only child & what one parent starts their child out at might not be right for every parent. So, I suggest to just start out at a small amount & go from there. Good luck!!

I am 56, a recently retired elem teacher and raised my own . Allowance is an unusual term. Love and Logic online talks about it. When children are in the family, their chores are actually part of belonging to the family. And in reality it feeds their self esteem to help out , to belong, but teaching children to use money and budget and save is very good , but my opinion is that you don't connect the 2. We don't get paid to cook dinner, wash the car , vacuum the floor etc. so if you pay them to do the chores, then ??/ But I did give my kids a weekly alotment for their budget but then they couldn't ask me for a dime. 15 years ago when they were in high school I gave them $50 but then they never got another penny from me at all and it was well explained before they got it so they knew. I meant what I said and boy did they learn to save and budget and shop on those sale racks.

Well as a mother i give my child 10$ a week & that's if she does all her chores. I think that is a great a amount. And if she does more than she's supposed to then she gets maybe 5 more dollars.

I don't think children should be given an allowance for chores. That's sharing family responsibility. Maybe you could give them extra money for doing something that is not part of the norm like washing the car, cleaning Grandma's house.

I believe the best rate for an allowance is a dollar for every year of age my 7 and 5 year olds get $7 and$5 respectively...if they've earned it.

hmm, a 9 year old should probably get like around $5 a week which would get them $20-$25 a month which would lead to $240-$300 a year.

or .... if u think thats too much, you can do $10 a month which would lead to $120 a year.

i think #2 is more reasonable

When my son was young, we had a chore chart. Different chores got different amounts of money. His room was not part of the chart. He could work for whatever he wanted. He is now a productive math teacher.
