This was a source of Pride for the Scribes and Pharisees, to speak of your lineage made the Priest feel as if they were a better people than the common folk. Here is what Jesus Christ said to them same people; John 8:44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.....51 Verily, verily, I say unto you, If a man keep my saying, he shall never see death.

52 Then said the Jews unto him, Now we know that thou hast a devil. Abraham is dead, and the prophets; and thou sayest, If a man keep my saying, he shall never taste of death. ...58 Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.

59 Then took they up stones to cast at him: but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by.

All of the genealogies were a source to point to Jesus Christ being the Messiah and there was no further need after the Messiah had come to us because Now the Gospel was free and available to everybody.
I am amazed how people do not believe the Bible and continue to call Jesus Christ a Jew; Galatians 3:28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.

Titus 3:9
But avoid foolish questions, and genealogies, and contentions, and strivings about the law; for they are unprofitable and vain.

Seems to me it never should have been popular in religion to begin with ...

It is popular in religions that value the concept of succession. Nothing has changed, really. Religions (and denominations) who observe sacramental theology still carefully track their lists of succession.
