My daughter who just turned 11 is having bad hair loss problems. Everytime she takes a shower, a very large amout of hair falls out. She says that when she runs her fingers through her hair, or when taking out her ponytails, etc., there are always many strands left in her hand. What is happening and what can I do to further prevent this from happening?

She shampoo+conditions her hair everyday since it's the summer and she puts on a lot of sunscreen, goes to the pool often, etc.

Her hair is VERY thin right now. If you press lightly on it, it feels about as thick as a piece of glass. I'm really worried

Hair loss can be caused by alopecia (spelling?), which is a condition that makes your hair stop growing and fall out. Or you could just have early hair loss. My brother had a thick mop of hair as a kid, but he was very thin on top by the time he was 30. One of my sisters started losing hair as a teen and has worn hairpieces since then. You might also ask your dermatologist to diagnose what could be wrong. And Rogaine may help, but not always.

Sounds like she could have a minor health issue called hypotyroidism, which means the thyroid is low causing hair to be dry and brittle. Easy diagnosed with a blood test, it is best to have it checked out. In the meantime tell her NOT to shampoo every day, comb wet hair not brush, and stop wearing ponytails that pull on the hair. Hair loss is normal, for some people more in the summer.

I am sorry .. 11 is a young age for hair loss...
make sure she takes lots of proteins in her dier.. specially vitamin A,C and D... ask her to take leafy vegetables...
I dont think she needs to wash her hair everyday... ask her to apply lots of conditioner and run her fingers thru her hair.. this prevents from tanglings... comb her hair properly to remove all the taglings before she gets into shower.. 'coz tangeld hair gets more tangled when you wash it...
And if she is using the hot water and if you have an electric heater at home.. it might be a problem too... try using cold water and heat some water on the stove and use it..believe me it works.. atleast worked for me.. if you thing this is too much of work try buying a filter from amazon.com which can be fixed to the shower.. my friends say that this helped them...
Good Luck... and talk to a doctor if you can.. they can give some multi vitamins :)

The same thing happened to me when I was around that age or just a little older...but the hair loss did eventually slow down back to a normal rate after a little while. In my case we just attributed it to growth and the onset of wacky hormones.
So, this could be completely normal, but I think if you start seeing patches of hair loss or anything else that looks unhealthy, a visit to the doctor wouldn't be a bad idea.

She should probably get to a doctor to have her thyroid checked among other things. She may or may not have hit puberty but may have a bad hormone imbalance. Hair loss may be an obvious symptom but is she having other more subtle issues? Such as extreme tiredness, bleeding gums, change of appetite, weight gain or loss? All of those things may be an indicator of something not quite right.

♥ My hair is very thin too but also very thick. Try using a very stong shampoo like Fructis. If you see the commercial it shows that its holds it in very well and it very strong.

If that doesn't help contact a doctor or your local hair cutter, they will tell you something else to try. ♥

Hair loss is primarily caused by a combination of aging, a change in hormones and a family history of baldness. As a rule, the earlier hair loss begins, the more severe the baldness will become.

IF she blow-dries/straightens/curls/ anything with heat applied directly to her hair. , she should stop. because things like that dry out your hair.maybe take her to a hair dresser or someone and ask them.
