I wish to improve fitness and get to a point where I feel confident if I am placed in a hostile situation. How long will it take to attain a decent level in martial arts? How long for a black belt etc. Any help would be great. Cheers.

It really depends on what you are comfortable with and the types of instructor/clubs you have i did karate and it took about 2 years to reach a very high level but this was twice a week i attended the problem i found with karate was it was very much competetion based rather than self defence but clubs are diffrent. ju-jitsu is a bit more hardcore with alot more techniques i decided to leave that one for a while i'm taking on kickboxing purly so that i get fun as well as self-defence so i'm looking forward to going and having a good time and not be treated like i'm in the army standing in a bunch of lines for 2 hours

Try Keichu Do.It's a martial arts system that's based on self-defense.All depends on how much you practice. You won't be Bruce Lee overnight, but with practice you'll get good much faster.Black belts usually take about 4-8 years (actually, four years is really unusual).Good luck.
P.S.Keichu Do is also called Cajun Karate.

I recommend Tae Kwon Do.
it is the way of the foot and hand
it develops your mind, body and spirit
it's the best thing that has happened to me....
it takes about three to four years to become black belt.......
you attain a decent level in the arts through practice.

I'd recommend looking into ninjutsu.

Jiujutsu is effective, or used to be. Now, everyone knows how to defend against its tricks, which means you have to be much better to pull off jiujutsu moves. Also it is not designed for real street fighting, but rather long, greuling battles in a ring to determine who is "best". I'm had jiujutsu guys put arm bars on me -- not a single one worked out for the other guy, and I'm only 145 lbs. and not very skilled in ninjutsu.

Which is what I recommend -- ninjutsu. Nothing beats a ninja.

Also, belts don't matter -- surviving does.

I remember hearing Sammo Hung say: "Belt only good for holding up trousers." So don't worry about getting grades, just enjoy the lessons and practise the skills. That's more important.
Which one is best? None of them and all of them. Every sensi has something to offer. Take what works for you and leave the rest for the others.
How long will it take? Make it clear and be honest about why you want to learn. It doesn't take a lot of moves to defend yourself. Life is not a movie.
Confidence is what counts and practise is what matters.

Karate and Taekwondo are good for fitness and self defence, martial arts like Judo and Jujitsu are good just for kicking someone's ***, and Kung Fu, Aikido and Tai Chi are all very effective but take a long time to master.

You'd want to be able to have a great defensive counter attack arsenal. Judo or Aikido. Great defensive stuff. Obtaining a Black belt could take years of dedication. About a year of dedicated practice could put youo where you need to be in terms of self defense.

Forge the belts man. Just focus on learning how to protect yourself. Whatever style you decide to study just make sure they teach it realistically. Don't waste your time with schools that teach a lot of flashy technique that can get you killed in the street.
