Most historians who have studied religions that predated the bible agree that most people worshiped a pagan snake god that supposedly created the earth. The snake in the garden of Eden was a jab at that snake god. It was common practice to demonize the gods of previous religions when creating a new one.
There was a fascinating documentary on the Discovery channel about this last week.

The word used was serpent. An ancient meaning for the word serpent is "Mischievous child." The reason the two was able to talk is because the serpent wasn't actually a snake as many believes. The serpent was actually a mischievous child.
Is it not written that the devil was standing while speaking to Jesus?
When Adam took Eve as his wife, they entwined and became one flesh. That one flesh is a child, which was the serpent. So the serpent wasn't actually a snake.
Think of a child and its birth parents. Does not the parents see each other in their own child? The wife sees herself in the child and the father sees himself in the same child. That's how a husband and wife become one flesh, because in the child they are one.
That's why Eve would communicate with the serpent, because it was actually her own child, not a real snake.

first you need to know the Bible when you want to quote it. all it says is it was fruit of the tree of good and evil. does not say if it was an apple or not. some christians say it was an apple but actually there are a couple other fruits that if it were one was one of those not an apple.
second it was satan who talked he new there language and was able to speak it.
and the Bible does not say snake either. just serpent. and serpent was satan

The "snake" is a symbol of evil and Satan. Satan appeared as a snake to tempt Eve. The fruit that you speak of (i.e, apple), was not mentioned in the Scripture. The fruit was not identified.

from what I read it looks like they talked about large events that took place over years but somehow in telling these events or in translation these large time consuming events became small un important things .a little example ,, in genesis they mention the river that flowed out of eden and spoke of the name of this little town where there was gold , in passing almost. easily overlooked,,but Gold ?,why even mention that unless we already know how to melt it down , and so youve got to figure in how many generations just went by in that paragraph ,,verse even.,,so the serpent came after that, and was said to be ( subtil )more subtil then any beast of the field, websters would paint him as difficult to detect or analyze; elusive 2. not immediatly obvious;abstruse... it goes on , so it would be my guess they arn't refering to its looks but its personality, I'm thinking there is alot more people involved then the translaters would have you believe, but at this point I'm just guessing...
