Even if it's been months or years?

It would have been better if you had asked to return it sooner . . . because by now the person may have lost it or thrown it away - or down right even deny they even borrowed it! It's happened to me!!

Try these:
"Hey, about that so and so I lent you could you give it back to me in about a week how about on this Sunday?"
Before we split can you give me that shirt I lent you I need to tye dye it/wash it/my family member loves it etc make an excuse to have it back. I personally think as long as you keep it calm not agressive and open that its better than saying "I NEED IT NOW!"

Of course you should. Some people are just not good at giving things back. But in the future, I really would think twice about lending them something again.

Yeah, I have a friend who always forgets to return everything she and her husband borrow. They borrow a ton from different people I know. So, I had to learn to say nicely, "Do you still happen to have that... thing... I let you borrow I need to use it. Thanks." Yes even after months or years. As a matter of fact they are moving, I intend to get our ladder back we let them use 1.5 years ago or so.

Yes. Simply ask for it back. Say something like, I would like to have my _______ that I let you use. I might be needing it in the future myself. May I come by to pick it up this evening?

Yes! A lot of times when you lend someone something it's not clear to them that you want it back. Especially if you never ask for it back!

You're well within your rights to ask for it back. Repeatedly, if necessary.

Yes, tell them you need it back. It's so rude of someone to borrow something and not return it promptly. If they still need it, they should buy their own. Now you know that you can't loan anything else to this person.

Yes, not if it's years, but after a reasonable time has passed, I would remind them that it was just a loan.
