Someone yesterday asked if dogs can smell cancer. (The question is still open in "dogs" if you wanna look at it.) I thought they could but was curious and did some research.
I found out that yes they can smell cancer, it is some sort of "sixth sense" as it is called by some. They are acutally training dogs to sniff out skin, breast, lung, protstate and other sorts of cancers on humans.
I found the article sooo fascinating. I will go look it up after i post this and return and edit this with the web address.
But to answer your question... If dogs can smell cancer I whole heartedly believe they can smell pain. Of all different kinds... physicall and mental.

Dogs cannot really smell pain but what they can do is sense it in your actions. They know when someone is in pain or sick by that persons reaction in general. When your in pain or sick you walk different, talk different and sit different. You just about do everything differently from normal. Dogs are very smart and people don't give them enough credit. They can even sense the difference between the actions of 2 children, 1 normal and 1 handicapped. They will react to each differently.

Interesting question. My dogs seem to sense injury too.
I am not sure if the smell it or are able to detect additional heat coming from it.
It's probably not too different than the dogs that can smell cancer.

Well, they have all these dogs that can detect termites in your home, therapy dogs, seeing eye dogs for the blind and assistance dogs, YES! especially a german shepard. These dogs are highly intelligent and this dog may be trying to tell you something. He might know something you and your dr. don't. I'd call my dr. and discuss it with them and if they laugh, get another dr. opinion. It might turn out to actually him trying to tell you and your dr. something. He is your faithful companion, right? then this really may be the time to listen! good luck!

yes dogs do know when you don't feel well. when I had epilpesy my dog sensed when I was going to have a seizure before I had it. your body puts off an odor that they can smell and that's how they know when you don't feel good.
